I spent 30 dollars for 20 favors. Not too expensive at all. I kept it simple and did just 1 thing that fit our theme. Oh, and each kid took home a balloon (those came with the party package.

Too much. I made favor bags with a mini notepad, special marker, stamp, stickers, tattoos, and glow in the dark dinosaurs. Then I thought it wasn't enough and bought books too ($2-$3)! We also had a dirt making activity where the kids could bring home their dirt in mini ball jars. I tend to go overboard...

I like to give homemade favors that aren't "treasures" that the kids will want to save forever and ever. For both 1st and 2nd birthday, I did cookies that went along with the party theme and for 2nd birthday I also added in some homemade playdough and the kids painted pumpkins as an activity and took those as well.

We pretty much always do favors (seems like the norm around here) but I try to avoid the typical plastic junk and treats/sweets. I've done $1 Scholastic books, play doh, Crayola watercolor set, etc. I keep it to $5 and under per kid.

We did maybe $3/kid for 2nd bday party -- 2 small playdough (bought the party pack for like $5 at TJ Maxx), 1 sheet stickers (bought a sheet of 10 for like $2 at Target), a pencil (set of 10 for $1 at Target), a book from Target $1 spot and bubbles (3 for $1 at Target). Definitely don't think you have to spend that much if you decide to do favors, and like others have said I think favors are 100% optional.

I spent $25 on a set of 15, but that was after I went to five different stores and did not find anything that was both good and cheap. If you have a PartyCity near you, check out out - I found some gorgeous lollipops and some pretty neat small toys there.

Last year we spent about $20 but like others, it was part of an activity (pinata filled with candy, stickers, some mini-playdohs). I am always so appreciative when we leave a party empty-handed, haha. I just really hate clutter and we have too much of it as it is! But we're the mean parents who request no gifts for for our kids' parties. :silly:

@LulaBee: Hahaha I love it. Totally fine! So in your situation I would have just had out sidewalk chalk, bubbles, maybe some ribbons/streamers to run around with....and if anything went home with the kids, FAB, if not, into my trash can it all goes! :) :)

I seriously think all kids care about is the cake/cupcakes though! Nothing else matters if they're getting sweets!!!! :)

And can I just say, my girls would absolutely go bonkers over a rainbow unicorn party. Fun fun fun!

They were included in our party package this year, we got a water wow and a superhero mask making kit (it was worth about $10, but I think we paid wholesale price for them). Otherwise, I think we would have done something edible...favors are kind of expected. The kids love them and ask for them.

@Mamaof2: This is what we always did at my birthday parties growing up and I really like this idea!

So far I've spent $40 or under each year. I found little sand buckets with scoops for $1 each at Party City and filled with bubbles, plastic jewelry, whatever. In the past I've given homemade cookies, and the only cost there was the cost of ingredents and treat bags.

ETA: we had about 20 kids this year, and about 10-15 in previous years.

@runnerd: @LulaBee: Agree that you totally don't need specific "favors" - I don't specifically buy a little bag of junk that kids take home. When DD was 2 or 3, we did a book per kid, but otherwise it's just the products of activities (so dress up, a small craft, etc. that go home with them, or things like balloons or a themed lollipop that "go away" after a few days)

Thus far, $0 - we didn't do favors for 1st or 2nd birthday. Maybe when kids are older I will start, but the amount I would spend on favors at this point would just create more "junk" for the parents' house

I'd say between $5-$15, but our favors are always part of the party decor or activity.... For example, at my daughter's 4th birthday, the kids left with a "walker" dog Mylar balloon, a small stuffed dog with a collar they made from beads (adopt a puppy station), blingy sunglasses/plastic jewel rings, and sparkly puppy tattoos. But this was what they did at the party because it was at our house; I wasn't paying for a venue and food was cheap since it was just fruit, snacks, and cupcakes. And there were only about 8 kids including my own.
