@Dagny: We spend about $150-$200 each week. My family includes myself, my husband, my 13 year old daughter, and our 19 month old son. A lot of the cost comes down to items for my daughter's school lunches - I buy lots of snacks, so she has a variety of food to choose from. I'm also a sucker for the snack-size items. Instead of buying a big bag of say, Smartfood, I'll buy the individually packaged bag for the convenience. We also buy a lot of fruit and veggies each week.

I think we sit at about 100 dollars a week (not including eating out) I will estimate we spend about another 100 dollars a week for eating out. :) I have been trying to cut out eating out as much by meal planning but ... the best laid plans of mice and men happen to us all the time. Things just come up.

We spend about $100 a week on groceries (doesn't count eating out). We try to buy organic when possible (and always for certain things like dairy and berries). We also have a garden which helps. We also aren't afraid to buy in bulk and freeze.

We spend 50-75 every 2 weeks. Well in groceries. We do not calculate how much is spent on eating out. Also my parents take us out sometimes or invite us for dinner.

Thanks for your responses everyone! DH and I had a serious conversation about this (which including him reading this thread) and he is totally on board with committing to a meal plan, helping me plan it each week, and participating in food preparations! We'll see how it goes, but I'm very hopeful we'll be able to cut down our ridiculous food costs. :)

@TemperanceBrennan - thanks for your suggestions. Your suggestion about getting DH more involved in meal planning was a great idea! I think it will really make a difference.

@Silva - we don't eat very much meat. We usually have fish once a week and sometimes have meat in take out food, but we don't usually cook meat at home. Thank you for your tips! I've been working on using beans and lentils more, but making a big batch and soup and freezing is a great idea!

We spend about $200/week, but this also includes feeding my MIL and FIL on top of me, DH, J, and N.

It doesn't include eating out or toiletries or anything like that. We don't eat organic, except for the dirty dozen, milk, and eggs.

Depends on the week, but I would say we average $150 a week. We buy organic whenever we can and try to eat minimal processed foods. I think it helps that we don't eat out much.

On average we spend $600/mo and that is including toiletries, costco and diapers. We have a family of 5 (2 adults, 12 yo, 2.5 yo, and a 6 mo. old) and my step-daughters every other weekend.

I shop at a local produce shop for fruits and veggies, I shop at our only grocery store in town (safeway) and use their club card coupled with their savings app, I try to use coupons but I'm really bad at them! We buy beef from my parents.

We spend on average $120 a week. Thats for 2 adults and a toddler. No organic, but its all meals (including dh's food for work) and snacks. Our food is expensive here in New Zealand so I think we're doing pretty well.

ETA: that amount also includes diapers and toiletries.

My budget is $550/mo for all food. We eat mostly organic and don't cook meat (I might get a burger out at a restaurant, though). I rarely meet my budget. This month, I spent $700, so I still have a ways to go to meet my goal.

The biggest thing that has helped me is changing where I shop--I now go to Aldi first, then Trader Joe's, then the local health food store, then to a discount health food store for snacks. Try to price compare what you buy every week. I started getting cheaper eggs and making my own bread after I realized that I was spending $30 a week on just those two things. Well, I've made my bread for two weeks. It's a process ;).

Another thing that helps is to not only meal plan, but plan *cheaper* meals. So meals that have fewer/less expensive ingredients. Less cheese, or substitute a cheaper cheese. More beans for protein, those are cheap!

It's really hard eating cheaply on whole organic foods because it's hard to find coupons. On top of the added expense for the organic. I think it's worth it to spend a little more for quality ingredients, but I feel like you could definitely cut your budget a good bit.

There are four of us: myself, DH, DD (3.5yo) and DS (17m). This is our budget and 95% of the time we stay within it.

$350/month on groceries
$70/month dining out
$13/week for dinner at church (once each week)
$30/week split between DH and I for lunches
$60/month for meat (buy in bulk when needed/on sale)

We buy very little organic but spend a lot on produce.

@Dagny: we buy almost 100% organic, and always local for meats/dairy/produce (well, not local produce in the winter). We spend about 120 a week for a family of three, which includes all our meals.

Do you eat meat? The biggest way we save money is buy only eating meat once or twice a week at dinner. We eat leftovers for lunch, so I don't buy stuff for sandwiches. We eat lots of lentils and beans.

Eta: I plan all our dinners, and we eat the same thing for breakfast every day (oatmeal one week, English muffin with peanut butter the next, cereal, etc.)
We have soup once a week, and I usually make extra to freeze. This makes for a nice, quick dinner you can pull out if things fall apart.

about 100 a week, and it doesn't get us far at all. :( But its the maximum we can spend. I try to buy from the cheapest grocery stores (walmart or aldi's is around here) but we def cant afford to buy organic ( I have no desire either) or anything like that. we eat pretty modestly, nothing fancy.

Our grocery store closeby is expensive so we typically spend $250 for 2 adults, 2 toddlers and a part time nanny. I typically do one big shop on the weekends without kids in tow since we often entertain on the weekends which is about $175 and then one mid week trip for fruit, bread, lunch meat and other fills in with the kids and it ends up around $75. I am contemplating changing grocery stores, but the quality is great and they are helpful with taking groceries to the car, etc.

We have/had the same problem. We spend around $100-$120/week on groceries (try to buy quality meat and organics). In the past I've spent around $20 per week eating out for breakfast (Panera, McDonalds) and anywhere from $10 - $40 per week for lunch. DH was less than I was spending, but it was still significant, around $30/week. We would also regularly eat out on the weekends, so we probably weren't too far off from your number, but we don't have kids.

Things that helped us change (but we don't have kids yet, so I'm sure that makes things harder):
We get an online meal plan that has 5 dinners per week. We make the dinners and eat leftovers for lunch the next day. We try to limit our groceries to only things on the meal plan list.

DH helps me prep all the food on Sunday (chop veggies, make marinades, etc.) He also starts cooking on Tues, Wed, and Thurs because he gets home before I do. I think him actively helping prepare the food makes him want to eat it more - both for dinner and lunch the next day. The meal plans come with step-by-step recipes that are easy for him to follow.

My office culture is awful about eating out. Most of my coworkers get lunch out everyday in a group, so it is hard to decline and feel like you are missing out on the camaraderie. I just had to get over feeling left out and I've noticed more and more people have started bringing their own lunch.

It also helped me to look past the money part and realize how much food we were wasting by throwing away leftovers, letting the food expire in our fridge, etc.

Lately, anywhere between $90 and $130 per week. The goal is to average $100 per week.

ETA: It is only me and DH, and the only things I tend to buy organic are fruits and veggies.
