I do plan on pumping as well but won't let my baby scream hungry if she isn't getting what she needs from the breast or of I can't pump fast enough to meet her demands. Also, I want my husband to be able to feed her to help me with feedings and for him to bond as well.

I'm pro breast and bottle and think babies can thrive on either or a mixture of both :)

Anything related to a baby is expensive, so I just don't think about the cost of what it takes to feed my son. I cut way back on other gear and clothes to keep the budget in check.

It was important that I find a formula manufactured close to home, after the milk tainting scandal in China. In the beginning we used about 4 cans per month at the cost of $100, at the end, we were down to 2 cans per month at $50. About half way through we realized we could buy the same stuff in Germany for half the price, so we started buying there and our expenses were cut in half.

@artbee: I agree. I tried so hard and it just didn't work. I don't feel guilty though. No way!

About $80 a month, one or 2 cartons a week.

@Nskillet: have you considered just pumping for daycare? That's my plan. If I can avoid formula completely, I will. Our baby will be in daycare 9 hours a day starting at 4 months.

@Nskillet: You probably should look at pumping instead of supplementing with formula if you want to keep your supply up. My baby took a bottle from the first few weeks but it was breastmilk.

We have been very fortunate we have not had to supplement yet. It really is quite the expense.

About 4 cans of formula a month and we use Earth's best, which we buy on Amazon's subscribe and save so about $85 a month.

We use Target's Up&Up brand of formula. It's on sale about ever 4 weeks @ $17 a carton. Carton lasts us a little over a week. So about $68 bucks a month.

Nothing. DS is EBF so far.

At some point we may have to switch to a "medical food" hypoallergenic formula from the pharmacy. I've heard the cost is anywhere from $35-60 a can depending on your pharmacy! One of the main reasons why I want to avoid formula as much as possible (plus I don't think DS would tolerate it anyway and we are really out of milk alternative options at this point).

@Nskillet: Aww thanks, you're so sweet! It's true, we were both much happier when I stopped breastfeeding. It's just hard not to feel the mommy guilt, especially when you're surrounded by "Breast is Best" everywhere!

@Nskillet: Hope breastfeeding does work for you! You could also pump to get your LO to drink from a bottle- that way your supply won't go down. I think I will try again when we have baby #2. Although I'm dreading it more than I dread childbirth again... but the worst that can happen is that I stop and the baby gets formula. Hopefully I won't be as hard on myself as I was last time.

@artbee: I know, I wonder how successful I'll be and I know how hard it is. I'm hoping my thick skin/high tolerance for pain works in my favor. However, I do plan on supplementing with formula from day 1. She's going to daycare and needs to know how to eat from a bottle.

I've accepted that I may fail, will you ever try again with future babies? My sisters both aren't even trying with their 2nd kids.

@Nskillet: I thought that too, but sometimes it just doesn't work for people. I was so upset that we had to start buying formula because it's so expensive. Luckily my Dad has bought all of LO's formula so far. He's awesome!

A lot! We use Gerber Good Start Gentle- It's the only thing that keeps LO pooing. We tried a lot and everything else made her constipated.

It's a little over $22 at Target, and we probably go through 2 in a week to a week in a half.

Oh man this is a good one! I joke with DH to kiss my bippys goodbye cause I'm nursing even if it means my nips fall off! The cost of formula kinda scares and is my motivation to stick with it!

We will see how long I truly last working FT and acting as primary food source though.....
