Then once a year we spend about $150 on vaccinations/licenses, and then maybe twice a year there's a few days of boarding involved. (We use YNAB too to keep it separate). Our monthly cost for our two dogs is very low, just Kirkland brand food from Costco, maybe $30 per month. I get free treats and flea/heartworm treatments and sometimes food from my mom (who gets them free from her work). We keep a sinking fund that we throw money into each month to cover unexpected vet bills, flea treatments, heartworm, and annual checkups. I think I calculated that we spend about $1000 a year for our one dog.</p> <p>ETA: We use YNAB (You Need a Budget) software for our budget and it lets us make as many different categories as we want, which avoids having to make a million sub accounts in our banking. I use YNAB to track our pet expenses fund. Each month I put money into each account - usually I average what we spend throughout the year to get a monthly amount we should be budgeting for.
