@jape14: thank you!
@Anagram: I hadn't thought about that good point. I live in NC. I'll look more at care.com and maybe nextdoor.com too.

Generally where I live its 15-20 per hour for one kid, plus 2 weeks vacation, sick time, and a weeks pay of bonus once or twice a year.
Ours only works about 10 hours a week for us, so I pay $20 given that she is flexible with her time and I don't guarantee her a certain number of hours.

We live in the northeast and pay ours $18/hr under the table (her request) for 2 kids. She does put away their laundry, tidy up, and make their mess while she's there. She's with us 2 days/week.

@autumnleaves: Where do you live? In my area, the more hours a nanny works, the more flexibility there is with payment. So if you are only hiring a nanny part time (like 20 hrs a week), so you are expected to pay more per hour than someone whose nanny works 45-50 hours/wk.

It's generally a sliding scale based on education/experience, etc. In my area, it's $14-$20 for 1 kid, and $15-25 for 2. Take home pay. Pretty big difference. We pay $740/wk for 2 kids, an do not expect our nanny to cook or prepare meals for the kids or do any household chores. She does do the kid laundry 1x/wk. She has just 1 kid during the hours of 9-2:30 pm, and I'm home by 4-4:30 most days.

~$1 5/hour here (a major city in the south).
Some friends do a flat rate of $600/week for simplicity, which works out to $15/hour on an 8 hour day.

When we lived in NC, we were expecting to pay $12-13/hr (take home...so more if over the table) for a nanny for one kid.

When we lived in a CO ski town, I paid $18/hr for 1 kid and $25/hr for 2 kids takehome. The more expensive one was seriously like the crunchy Mary Poppins though -- tons of experience both nannying and teaching preschool, came with activities to do with the kids, embraced a nature-based/natural childhood, etc. Both of those were part-time and didn't work enough hours for us to have to worry about withholding taxes.

In MN, we pay our sitters $12-15 for 1 kid and $20ish for 2-3kids takehome, depending on level of difficulty ;) aka who's awake how long, if they typically clean up after the kids once they are in bed, etc.

We paid our nanny $17/he for one child. I believe that for her other family who just had a 2nd she charged like $19/20?
I have heard that the range for one child in my area is $15-20 and for 2 children is like $18-25. 2 kids seems to be a much bigger range.

We live in the Northeast. It's definitely north of $15/hour here. We paid our first nanny $16/hour over the table (so it actually cost us more, because we paid employer taxes and withheld her taxes). Second nanny was $17/hour and in her second year got a raise to $18/hour - over the table. We have 2 kids, but one of them was in school for the first year, part time. The second year, both kids were in school part time but the nanny did house chores, shopping, errands, etc.

The people I know who have nannies pay 15-20 per hour. A lot of people use au pairs, they love the language/cultural aspect, costs less (although you have to think about hidden costs like possibly a car for the au pair, food) but you have to have the space for them and be willing to share your home.

@autumnleaves: I'm in NC and we are currently in a nanny share. We started out in a share with 2 kids at $15/hr, approximately (we just pay a monthly salary), so each family contributed $7.50/hr. This worked out to $1300/month which, even accounting for taxes, is slightly cheaper than infant daycare at the 5-star centers in my area. Now we have 3 kids in the share and we pay our nanny $3000/month, or roughly $17.25/hr (we have one kid and pay $1000 and the family with two pays $2000). At this rate it's definitely cheaper than daycare. Once our second kid arrives, we are dissolving the share and we are keeping the nanny at her current rate -- 4 kids is way too much to handle as @LBee: mentioned. Even though it'll be more expensive for us than daycare (we will also have our older LO in morning preschool), it's worth it for the convenience, less exposure to daycare germs, continuity in care for my older LO, etc.

We live in Northern CA but outside the SF Bay Area. $17 for one kid is considered entry level for a professional nanny per the agency we were working with. I think 2 kids with a bit more experience is in the $19-21 range.

We ended up sending DS1 to a school with a 2's program and DS2 will join him in the infant when I return to work.

@LBee: thanks! I agree I think when you get to 4 kids, it seems like the size of an at home daycare group of kids and there would be less opportunities for going out to the park or some place they would need to drive to.

@autumnleaves: Our nanny wasn't comfortable with more than 3 children and frankly we weren't either. I also think to find someone comfortable with that amount of children you would be looking at the $20 range. @jape14: can probably address this more as she just went through it with her nanny share.

Beyond just comfort I like that our nanny is able to take our kids to storytime, the zoo, etc. I think when you get in the arena of 4 kids you lose that opportunity.

@littlejoy: Yes - I need to try to find a nanny share. I don't know much about them but it sounds like if I have 2 kids in it, I will likely need to have it at my home with another child joining unless a nanny is comfortable being responsible for 4 children.

We paid $10, but I work from home and our nanny had no prior experience. I wasn't hovering (I was in a different space in the home), but I felt ok with this since I was close. It was a great fit.

I think a nanny with a bit more experience would likely charge $13-$16 an hour. We're in Portland, Oregon - childcare is insane here, so finding a nanny in the first place is hard work.

I did the math when we decided to put LO into a preschool. Hourly rate for school broke down to be about $7.50 an hour (we are charged monthly) vs. $10 per hour for the nanny.

We'll do a nanny for the first 12 months again, because I like the convenience of not taking my kid to and from school (that should factor into the cost), and having them at home while I'm BFing.

A nannyshare would be a GREAT ideal, if possible for you. In that case, most ask for $20 per hour, each family paying $10.

She nets $15 per hour. We are in a nanny share.

The nanny share is what makes it (slightly) cheaper than daycare as I don't need as many hours as I'm technically getting coverage for with daycare.

ETA: She didn't start at $15 an hour, she actually started at $14 an hour and we gave her a $1 raise per hour after a year with us. We live in the South and I have friends who pay $12 net per hour, though. We just really love our nanny and nanny poaching is a very real thing in our area.

Bumping this thread as I am trying to figure out if a full-time nanny for 2 kids could be cheaper than full-time daycare. I glanced at Care.com and it suggests nanny's get paid $15-25 an hour which would be more than daycare.
What do you know to be the hourly rate for a nanny? We would need someone 45-50 hours a week.

I am going to estimate that it would cost somewhere from $20-40, depending on number of kids. Families tend to have lots of kids in this area.

Here (Metro Detroit) average is $12 but it ranges mostly from $10-$14. In Philly and CT I was making around $25 plus benefits. Living outside of Detroit though is crazy cheaper than living in either of those places.

@abmamma: that's crazy! When I got raises for the family having more kids it was only like $1/hour!! When I was FT it was an extra $50/week (working 60 hour weeks).

@Bao: I was a live in for four kids and I was given a flat weekly rate. When I figured it out it was only like $7/hour. I should have been paid more as well. But I did have room and board, use of the car, gas and groceries covered.
