I paid just under $10k for an international move that consisted of packing, driving the goods to the port, shipping in a container, unloading at the port, driving to the destination and unloading. In total it was about 40 boxes (1 BR apt).

So, I'd shop around and get a few quotes for prices. If you call, they can usually give you an estimate right over the phone without seeing the actual goods.

We moved a larger 1BR apartment for around $5k, including our travel by car. That included a week or so of storage and two guys who came the day before we moved out to pack everything. The price was partly dependent upon how many cubic feet of stuff we had, so the less we moved, the lower our price. We gave a lot of stuff away, including our mattresses and some furniture, before we left. Shop around--I got estimates from some companies of over $10k for the same move!

My company moved me out of state in 2005 and for a one bedroom apartment they listed it on my W2 as costing $18K - yikes! I think that included a lot of other expenses though, I didn't get a breakout of what the movers actually charged. And they covered a few months of my rent on my current lease and a lot of other misc. fees as well. I think they even recorded some vacation days as 'move days' which added to the total.

If I were moving back today and going to hire movers, I would expect to pay them around $2-$3K and then have other costs associated with the move like move out fees, storage rentals, security deposits (if it's a rental), etc.

Also, if your company doesn't pay for moving expenses, it's a tax write off if you're moving for a job. We moved from Texas to NYC area this past summer and because DH's work gives a "signing bonus" rather than moving expenses, we still got to write off our moving expenses, even though we used a lot of his signing bonus to move.

You can include the actual moving trucks (or moving company), flights, hotel stays while en route, gas, storage units, etc.

So, save receipts!

We paid for our move and it was probably 3 or 4k when said and done. And we didn't hire movers. We moved from a smaller house so we didn't hire movers, but the cost of gas, rental truck, hotel alone were 2k+, plus all the extra expenses of time off, boxes, packing supplies, security deposit, etc. Miserable. Don't look forward to the next time we do it. (We moved IN to FL.)

We just moved (in Canada) from Alberta to Ontario, and the move itself cost roughly:

-cars each 1800
-packing and move of a 3 BR house about 12k
-rental car for a week while we waited for our cars to arrive
-storage of our items while we waited to get our new home 2k

And then the added costs of breaking our mortgage in Alberta, realtor fees, land transfer taxes for the new home, etc. But those are more specific for us!

All in all, it cost us about 60k (ouch ouch ouch) to sell/move/buy houses across the country.

When I last moved out of state with a 1-bedroom apt sized truck it was definitely at least 1k, and that was almost 7 years ago. And that was doing it myself (rented Ryder truck, driving it myself, packing/unpacking with friends).

My parents moved their 5bedroom house from GA to VA for a little over $4000. They used Mayflower. They also sold tons of stuff before moving, but still had a whole house. My husband and I moved our 2BR worth of stuff from GA to MD for $1200. We used US-1. US-1 was AWFUL. They lost our stuff in Miami, however if you look at a map- our stuff should not have been on a path to Miami! They ducked and dodged us, and we didn't have any of our belongings for 3 weeks. If you see them, run. My parents on the other hand, had a smooth move with Mayflower! We will use them for any future big moves.

We got relocated by my company so they paid for our moving costs. They only moved one of our cars so we had to pay out of pocket for the second car which was $1000. I'm not sure exactly how much my moving costs were but I found out later that my company covered up to $10k. I highly doubt we used all of that.

My friend moved from Miami to San Francisco and I believe they sold all of their belongings (TV, furniture) on craigslist and bought things they needed in their new town. They are minimalist, though. They were able to live in a one bedroom apt.

Have you thought about using one of those movable pods to move your stuff?

We are considering a move out of state... how much does it cost to move a 4 bdrm home and all the furnishings? I know obviously it depends on how much stuff you have!

Tell me how much it cost you to move everything! Did you sell/donate a lot of stuff before your move? I'm freaking out a little bit!
