I think I'm going to try an Evenflo Sureride. It goes to 65 lbs. But I may go to Target/Babies R Us to see some of the cheap seats in person. I have to figure out today though because we leave Sunday!

@PinkElephant: oh LO 2 feels heavy and not in a dense way...haha. She's....fluffy. You can see their difference in this picture. LO1 is 3 and can still fit comfortably in 18-24 month clothes (except they are too short), and LO2 is wearing 2t already. I can see LO1s ribs and stuff but LO2....well, LO1 pointed out that the baby has "big boobies like mama". hahahaha

@Anagram: my 4 year d (5 in December) weighs 37 lbs. she weighed 34 and her 4 year checkup,

We did something similar for travel but i wanted to echo others to check height too. Some of those 40 lb seats are for 40" or less and my LO was past that by 3 1/2 if not sooner. So one bigger weight/height limit is probably smart for you!

@Anagram: there are some other seats (I think evenflo, maybe) that are only about $20 more than the scenera. I think when I was looking I found the best prices on these cheaper models online from places like Walmart as opposed to Amazon.

And yes, it wouldn't be crazy for a three year old to weigh almost (or over) 40 lbs....and not necessarily look that large. One of DD1's best buddies is just a dense little kiddo - I remember once I went to pick her up out of a pack n play when I was babysitting her, and literally nearly could not do it - she was 3!

I did something similar -- we basically now have two cheap, lightweight carseats that we only use for travelling (so that we don't have to re-install in our cars when we get home, in case they get damaged, etc). We originally had just the Cosco Scenera for DD1, but now handed that down to DD2 because she outgrew the infant bucket. For DD2 (4y), I got the Evenflo Chase. I'm also pregnant with LO3, so eventually we'll pass both of those down again, and I'll just get a booster (high-back or just regular, depending on age/size) for DD1.

ETA: to answer your original question, my DD1 has always been around 50% for height and 30% for weight. She is currently 37lbs at 4.3y. But weight gain is pretty slow at this age!!

LO1 is 3 and weighs 28.5 lbs. I think that was...29% for 3 years old, or somewhere around there. So for her, I *think* it might last till maaaaybbe 5, if she gains 5 lbs per year (and I'm totally guessing about that. But she was 23 lbs at 2 years).

But LO2 is already 24 lbs at 1 year. Like she isn't even 1 until this Sunday. SO for her, it might just last another 2 years if we're lucky? I mean, could a 3 year old weigh 40 lbs? She's about 90% for weight.

My DD turned 4 in June and is 31 lbs. That's 18th percentile for a girl her age. She's only gained maybe 3 pounds since this time last year, so for her, I'd expect that seat to last a LONG time. Can you look on a growth chart and track how you'd expect your LO to grow based on the current percentile (if it's stayed steady)?

Honestly, from my experience, unless the $80 for the two seats will be a hardship for you, it's worth it to get them even if you donate them a year from now and save yourself the hassle - I hate lugging baby gear in airports!

My LO is 4 (turned 4 in June) and weighs 29 lbs. She is in the 20% or so for weight, so she isn't insanely small.

One of her little girlfriends just turned 4 and weighs 42 lbs. and I definitely don’t consider her “big” or bigger than the average 4 year old in the preschool class (there was one of those “all about me” boards at her birthday party a couple weekends ago; I’m not a stalker of this kid lol). So….could last until your LO is 4, or might not!
