@mrs. bird: I'm not sure how many ounces the cans are... but it's about the same size as a can of tunafish (for humans). Does that help?

My cat gets 1/3 cup of dry food in the morning and 1/2 can of wet food for dinner. He's a pretty sizeable guy, about 12 pounds -- not fat, though, but he could probably stand to lose a few ounces. He goes through phases where he barely touches his food and phases where he cleans his dish in 3 minutes and begs for more...not sure what causes that to happen though! Right now, he's in a normal eating phase, thank goodness.

@mrs. bird: haha it's like feeding a newborn!

Does your vet have any concerns?

Our kitties are 5lbs and 7lbs so they don't eat a lot.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: what's freaky about including a member of your family in your holiday festivities?? that's being a good mama! cosby is very much looking forward to santa claws this year ;) hehe. i'm waking up to feed my cat on average, every three hours, i'm think i'm takin' the cat lady award on this one, lol.

@autumn865: good point! he's about 9lbs now, but a little too thin for his frame.

I've only ever fed my cats dry food (I can't stomach the smell of wet). Our current cat gets 1/3c dry food every night. Right now his food is on my dresser because we suspected our dog of indulging while we were at work. He prefers to eat at night but aside from his crunching doesn't bother us.

I think a lot depends on the weight. My male 8 year old cat eats 6 ounces of wer food a day so 3 in the morning 3 in the evening. He has had health problems so he does not eat any dryas per our vet. He "begs" over the course of the day but never wakes us up at night (although he can get bossy if I take too long to prepare his food lol).

@mrs. bird: just the small ones. He's OBSESSED. He only gets maybe 1-2 cans a week though I usually only feed him dry food. He was a shelter cat though, and we think the runt of his litter, he was 7 lbs (skin & bones) when we got him and now he's a healthy 11-12. He's a scavenger though, he'll snack on any scraps we accidentally leave on the counter, he has some teeth/tartar issues bc of it...

@smocks: & @thismustbetheplace: are they big cans or small ones? he won't eat food that's been in a can (entitled much?!?), so he eat 3oz pouches, but some cat food cans are huge and others are tiny. specifically, he eats whiskas purrfectly fish tuna or tuna and white fish, he won't eat the 3rd flavor that comes in the box. i save them & bring them to the animal shelter. i've tried to get him to eat more wholesome foods- he won't. even the big $$$$ bag of blue buffalo was passed onto a friend when he wouldn't take a single bite!

@mrs. bird: aw, yea you gotta do what you got to do then! We did feed ours wet food for a brief time when he was REALLY sick and refusing to eat at all. We also have gotten him steak, salmon, raw chicken, cheese, yogurt, butter… we would literally give him ANYTHING with calories to get him to eat for a while. So I get it! Sounds like your kitty is on the mend though!! :)

@Mae: he had pancriatitis and he stopped eating earlier this year, he'd would vomit all dry food, so the vet said to feed him wet food & avoid any rich foods because they are harder to digest & that the dry food was probably too hard for him too. he lost a lot of weight (he was never a fat cat, just average, but got gross skinny) and she said feed him as much as he wants of whatever i can get him to eat, haha, he heard that and is taking advantage! hopefully his insane water intake will protect his kidneys. if i make him wait to eat food, he projectile vomits. he's a peach. i wish he would eat dry food again, then i could leave him like we used to & go away for weekends without finding someone to come feed him, but i don't see being able to switch him back. i leave dry food out for him at all times, but it doesn't get touched :(

Our kitty gets 1/3 can of wet food every evening, and then free-eats her dry food. She probably goes through about a cup of food every 1.5 days or so. We just always keep her bowl full so it's hard to say exactly. She's never had a problem over eating (thank goodness!)

Mine eats roughly 3/4-1 cup of dry food per day, or 1/3 cup dry and 1 can wet. I usually feed him once a day. He totally sleeps at night, right inbetween my legs haha

My cats only eat dry food. My vet recommends against wet food because she said that it can cause kidney issues because cats who eat wet food often don't drink enough water.

We have 2 cats and we feed them 1 even cup of dry food per day (total). They get 1/2 cup split between two bowls in the AM and 1/2 cup split between two bowls in the PM.

Honestly though their eating habits change a lot. We used to just feed them once per day and they would eat it all in like an hour and then not bug us. Then one of my cats got sick for a while and we had issues getting him to eat. Once he was healed his eating habits haven't remained consistent though (and the other cat seems to follow his lead). Sometimes he'll go for months and they never finish their food. Sometimes they'll have months where they eat all of their food within 30 min of giving it to them. I'm done trying to figure them out haha.

i've had cats since i was little, but they've always eaten dry food. cosby, my 10 year old cat, has become a wet food beast! he won't sleep through the night anymore & gets me up to feed him multiple times each night, which makes me wonder how much other cats eat. my lovely little cry baby cat just walked across my keyboard to add, " bvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv\\" that's all he has to say about that! i believe it loosely translates to, 'mama, stop be a B and go open me some more food dammit!' he's rude like that. and just because my little snaggletooth tiger is adorable, here he is :)

but really, how much does your cat eat and how often? do they sleep through the night?
