We spent about $3K on DD's 1st birthday, but like others have mentioned, first birthdays are huge in Korean culture. We had 75 guests and it was at a restaurant...it was like planning a mini wedding reception, almost! Went a lot smaller for her 2nd birthday and spent about $200 on catered food, decorations and cake.

For their first birthday, I spent less than $20 on cake stuff. Gifts, less than $20 per kid. I'm a cheap-o.

I really want to keep it to a minimum if possible. I am planning to make all of the decorations mostly with supplies that I have leftover from various projects/our wedding, bake a cake/cupcakes, cook the food, and design invites. Even doing everything diy I'm sure just the cost of food (and drinks of course!) will come out somewhere between $100-$200. We are having the party at our house with an invite list of about 35 people.

I overspent for their first birthday...probably around $600. We had just moved WAAAY far south (like, 2 hours) from all of our friends and family, so we rented a small (city-owned) facility closer to everyone else. That was $200 of it.

Until they're in school and old enough to have separate parties, I'll be capping it at $100 and we'll be having it at our house :-)

Spent a lot on her first bday (around $2,000) but first bdays are a big deal in Korean culture. For subsequent bdays, we won't spend nearly as much - probably around $500.

I already have ideas for the first and fifth bday. First bday party will be low key and maybe cost $200. The fifth bday will be a bbash" and will likely be a $1,000 we will see. B days in between will be celebrated by doing an activity and having dessert.

I think about 200, mostly on room hire, some balloons, yoghurt bar and ingredients for the rainbow cake but since I did a dry run of it that cake cost $$, lol. I loved her party though, it was fun. Next year will be cheaper for sure.

We spent about $300 for a baptism party. Mainly the food, we didn't want to cook since my sisters were visiting from out of state. But then my ILs ruined the party so we didn't invite anyone over for his birthday. I made a cake. I had to run to the store because we were out of baking soda and yogurt. So - $6.

Since I'm going to be 7 months preggo for DD's 2nd bday, we're doing it outside of the house, so it's costing more than I would like. I think it's going to end up being close to $400, but it's saving me A LOT of work, which is what I need right now.

@Smurfette: where did you get married? Just wondering as I also got married in small town GA!

In our small town, LO's two tier bday cake was 80 dollars I think. I didn't include it in the 200 I quoted above because it was a gift from the grandparents and had they not gotten it, we would have served DIY or SAM's club.

We just had the boys' first birthday party on Saturday. I think it was under $200 for everything, but excluding their gifts. We had it at our house, bought premade food from Costco to keep stress down and minimal decorations from Party City. We had about 25 people. But if you divide that by 2, we did pretty well, I think!

We've budgeted $200 for her first birthday. Quite honestly that is a lot of money for us and we're having to scrape by to save it, but first birthdays are very important to me and I think it's worth it.
Our guest list is small (10-15 people) and we're having it in the afternoon so that helps keep food costs down.

My LO is half Korean and my in-laws have insisted on keeping the Korean tradition of a huge first birthday party. They are footing most of the bill and it will cost around $1800 total. For future birthdays, I don't plan on having any parties until she can request them, so probably around 4yo-5yo, and will keep it small and simple, no more than $200-$300.
