He's 5 months and gets 3 5 oz bottles during the 9ish hours he's at daycare. LO1 went up to 6 oz at her max around the same age.

Like @JenGirl: said, my baby took 6oz bottles 4.5-7 months. We never bothered with paced feeding bc it took a month to get him used to the bottle (6-10 weeks old). It now is causing a bit of a bottle preference but I'd take that over bottle battles any day. I was pumping more than necessary for months 3-5 so I think the 6oz sizes were just right for us. Also, my baby seems to space out his feedings more than most, so total daily oz are probably similar, but he is just used to eating more in one sitting and lasting longer till the next. However, 8oz is huge...

DH fed our daughter 3-5 ounce bottles until she was 1. I pumped at work directly into the bottles and that's what he fed her (I never had a stash and we only did fresh milk). We never bought bottles that held more than 5 ounces so it was never an option.

My 10 month old, 24 pound, EBF baby (90th percentile for weight) only eats 3 4 oz bottles while in daycare. 8 oz is way way too much in one sitting!

8oz of breastmilk is way too much. Most BF babies don't go over 4-5oz. My first did 4oz bottles starting at 4 months and never changed. My second won't take a bottle currently, but when I go back to work next week I'm leaving 4oz per feeding. She'd probably take more since she doesn't take a pacifier and i always just boob her for comfort, but there's no way I'll pump more than 12-15oz at work so too bad for her!

Since about 5 months, mine has been taking 3 bottles at daycare that are 6 oz each. It's way more than most bff websites say, but I'm lucky to have an oversupply, so it works for us.

That said, I agree that she doesn't need to eat until when refuses. I'd try giving 6, and you can always give a little more if she's really fussing, but I bet she'll be fine.

My son is just shy of 4 months and pretty much 50th percentile across the board. He gets 4 bottles during the day between 730am and 730pm that are prepped at 6oz each but he will take around 5-ish ounces (but every so often he will have a growth spurt and finish all 6 so that's what I prep these days). He has a 3-4oz Dreamfeed at 1030pm. So total is he gets about 24-28oz a day. My eldest son BRIEFLY did 8oz bottles of breastmilk around 5 months old for like a week but generally was always in the 4-6oz range for a daily total of around 25oz.

If she's laying the baby down to eat, baby has no choice but to keep swallowing because it's dripping into her mouth. If she sits the baby up and keeps the bottle horizontal (so baby has to suck), then let her eat until she's done. Should be around 4oz though.

@rockinghorse: a good rule of thumb is 1-1.5 ounces of breastmilk per hour of separation so for eight hours you would be looking at 8-12 ounces.

I went back to work when my LO was 20 weeks old. I work 10 hour days and he would consume four 4oz bottles during the 11 hours that I was gone. He's 11 months now and has 3-4 4oz bottles. He's also huge (20lbs and 29 inches at 6months). He hasn't nursed over night since 3-4 months old. If she needs more milk then she should be offered bottles more often, but not bigger bottles. I can only assume that the person feeding her bottles like that used formula, which is totally different.

A good way to tell if it's too much is by how much she spits up, if at all. If she's not spitting up, she probably does need that much (though I'd think at that age 4-5oz would be plenty). If she's spitting up a ton then she's feeding too fast and getting in more than she needs.

@rockinghorse: You are not being greedy. An 8 ounce bottle of breastmilk is too much. My DD typically had 3 to 4oz bottles at that age.

What type of bottle nipple are you using? Are they doing paced feeding?

I don't think you're being greedy with your stash, I think that sounds like a lot of milk for a 4 month old!

I'm having a similar issue with my 4 month old. She only eats 4 oz bottles, but when she's home with DH or our sitter she will eat so.many.bottles. When she goes to daycare she eats a more reasonable amount of food and is not fussy or acting hungry when I pick her up.
I think DH and sitter are comfort feeding DD and that's why she's eating so much. Luckily I have the daycare daily reports to show how much less she can eat and be satisfied, so it's a work in progress for us.

Mine drank three 4oz bottles over the 8 hour period that I left her at daycare from 3 months until 12 months. There were a few times where she was going through a growth spurt and would require more, but never more than 16 oz over 8 hours. Mine didn't sleep through the night until 10 months, so you should take that into account as well. Since mine was drinking milk at night, she didn't need as much during the day. My friend's EBF baby was STTN at 3 months and needed more at daycare (I think 16 oz). 20 oz sounds like way too much for 8 hours.

Mine was ebf and refused a bottle for the most part, but I did get her to drink two at 4 months and they were about 4 ounces only. I have read that babies drink more from bottles and they don't necessarily need to be drinking as much as they do from a bottle. (I think I read that on Kelly mom when trying to decide how much I would need to defrost for a bottle around 6 months). I forget why, I think because they drink up quicker than from the boob and don't feel full, whereas if they were breastfeeding it would be a slower process and they would feel fuller sooner because eating took longer. It's the same for adults, we can eat more if we eat fast, but we don't need to eat all of that food we can scarf down. 8 ounces per feeding for a 4 month old sounds like a crazy big amount to me. I'm taking care of a 10 month old who is formula fed and he gets 4-6 ounces per feeding and an 8 ounce bottle before bed at night time.

So MIL and DH watch DD (4 months old) during the day. DD is EBF along with expressed milk. MIL insists that DD needs to eat until she refuses to eat anymore, which is turning into larger and larger quantities, culminating in her eating an 8 oz bottle yesterday (the 2 before were over 6 oz). So she ate over 20 oz while I was gone for 8 hours.

I don't know about you but I am crazy about my stash, and I think that 8 oz is too much. Kelly Mom says that they should be getting 24-30 oz a day no matter the age, and I would like to have her max out at 6 oz a bottle.

Am I just being greedy with my stash? How much are your LO's getting?
