It depends. Sometimes it will be more than half fat, and then other times it's like water, with a very thin layer of fat - more like little pieces of fat floating on top. It depends on what time of day I pumped, how long I pumped for, when I nursed/pumped last, etc. I wouldn't stress about it too much! It is pretty rare that there would be something "wrong" with your milk. Having said that, you will get more fatty hindmilk if you pump more often, and pump for longer. Also, doing breast compressions/massage helps get the hindmilk out.

It really depends on the amount of milk in the bottle. If it's 2 oz. or less, it's a skim coat, but anything more and it varies from 1/4 to 1/2 an ounce. I try not to worry about it.

I just checked mine. In 4 oz, I had 0.5 oz layer of fat. That's at 11 months.

Yeah, this is going to depend on the amount of milk in a container. To really compare, everyone would have to be measuring the same amount of milk--like say, the fat layer on 2 oz of milk.

When I store about 5 ounces, it varies. Sometimes it looks like I have as much as up to 3/4 of an inch. But other times it's less. And the longer I leave it in the fridge, the more it seperates, so....

I've never gotten much fat, just a thin little layer at the top. It's something I'd like to try and figure out and increase before baby #2's arrival.

It varies, but in a 5 oz bottle, probably about half an ounce is the thick separated fat?

Mine has changed over time - I get more fat now (LO is almost 8 months) than I did when LO was a newborn. This is so subjective too though based on the size of the container, I'm not sure how to compare with others.

@PurplePeony: My estimation of an 1/8 might be generous. I think it's possibly less. I'm going to ask my LC next week, and I'll be sure to update with what she says.

Wow, I only get a thin layer of the thick, creamy fat that separates out -- maybe 1/8" on a 5-oz bottle? Now I feel like I'm not giving her enough good fattiness. :(

For those of you who pump: how much of a fat layer are you getting on your milk? We are taking a break from BFing so my nipples can heal ... We are pumping as much as I can, and supplementing with formula. I noticed that my baby seems hungrier on days that she receives mostly breast milk (which I know is normal), but I also noticed that the fatty milk on top is only about an 1/8 of the liquid in the bottle. Wondering if that's light.
