Whatever fits in her Planetbox Shuttle. Some things in my lunch rotation:
- 5 dumplings, dipping sauce in dipping countainer, 4 strawberries, and 4 grapes.
- Ham and turkey sandwich with 4 carrots, ranch dipping sauce in dipping container, and 4 grapes.
- 5 chicken nuggets, ketchup in dipping container, 4 carrots, and 4 grapes.

I think the portions are just enough for her. Usually she'll come home with 1/4 of her sandwich left. Yesterday she came home with 2 dumplings left. So she never fully finishes a meal even though to me it doesn't seem like a whole lot. She also gets snack time at her school around 9:30 am. On weekends when we're at home, we rarely give her snacks before lunch, so I think that snack probably makes her less hungry for lunch.

@T.H.O.U.: LOs recess is an hour before lunch. So close together!!
Anyway, I think that's great that your LO eats the leftover lunch sides for afterschool snack! That's a great way to not waste yet provide enough.

Thanks. As of right now they do not get snacks. They can use recess time for snacks but I don't want her missing recess and it's literally right before lunch. We get home at 3 so she usually will have a snack or finish her lunch then.

I hate to waste food but also don't want her to be hungry!!

My LO is in pre-k but I think it's varies from day to day. Some days she eats all her lunch and other days she doesn't.

Yesterday she had 6 little chicken and cheese pinwheels, broccoli, honeydew melon, and raisins which she ate all of. Today she had something similar and didn't touch her broccoli or fruit.

I also pack 2 snacks for afternoon and that also depends on the day.

Today's lunch for Kinder was:

Small lunchable
cheese stick
box of yogurt raisins
Yoplait light yogurt
Capri Sun Water
Little Bite muffins

Nothing came home. She's a pretty good eater for lunch if she's given things she likes. I could easily sub the lunchable for a peanut butter sandwich and skip the muffins. And that will be gone too.

Veggies are clearly missing, LO doesn't like them at all. If I packed them, they'd come back home.

My LO gets 10 minutes to eat at preK and I usually pack one small sandwich (Hawaiian bread), carrots or cucumbers, fruit and some string cheese.

My LO has NEVER finished all his food. Some days I feel like I don't pack much at all. I'm starting to wonder if it's not necessarily what/how much I pack, but the socializing that's happening instead of eating.

Ok just eyeballing it, LO gets a cup of protein with grains for her main- sandwich or mac and cheese or lasagna or 5 nuggets or ravioli other. Then another half cup to cup of fruit. So basically a hearty main and a light side or two. She gets a grain/fruit (cereal bar or other) for snack and similar for snack right afterschool. So for your example I would do the nuggets and one or two of the sides. Like applesauce and carrots. Or cheese stick and half the grapes.

Is this including snacking periods in the day too? At my elementary school the kids get 2 eating periods. Kindergarten aged kids get an optional extra morning snack time. Otherwise there are 2 designated eating periods when the whole school eats and then they go out for recess.

That amount of food seems about right for some kids and to have variety for multiple eating periods. Unfortunately, I feel like it's trial and error with each kid. Also, it varies day to day because sometimes I would notice kids would eat a lot and sometimes barely anything. Sometimes I'd ask parents to pack more food for their kid because the kid would be so hungry and saying they ran out of food and then they'd get more food another day and it would be a day where they weren't very hungry.

Or other young elementary ages.

We are about six weeks into the year and I can't figure out lunch. Either I pack too much or not enough.

Today was 4 chicken nuggets cut up, 4 baby carrots, maybe 10 grapes, a cheese stick, and applesauce pouch. Water to drink. This was obviously too much.
