I feel like my post made me seem crazy controlling. But I mean like this--LO was coloring this morning and she did the orange line....and then I picked up the red marker and was showing her how to make smaller strokes in one place, and then she colored the green hair all in one spot, which O thought was really great for a 2 year old.

I have a baby too so I only get little 5 and 10 minute increments of time with LO1 so I just try to sit down with her and focus all my attention on her for a bit and then my teachery side just comes out, haha

I do a lot of intervening, if you want to call it that! But I don't say "no, put the nose over here". But I think of these things like skills LO will need to eventually learn--so I work with her to improve her coloring by showing her how to make small strokes instead of scribbling all around the page, how to stay in the lines (as well as a 2 year old can), etc. Like, making a face is an actual skill--so yes, at some point I would say, "Where does a nose go? On top of the eye? (And Lo will say no!) and I will say, on the chin? (And she'll say no!) and then I say, "how about the middle?" and then she'll say yes.

I guess I figure...how else will she learn? That's the teacher in me though. We do puzzles together and for sure I don't just watch her try to do it herself (she gets super frustrated). I show her how to find the corner pieces, then the edge pieces, etc.

It's probably annoying for someone else to watch....(shrug). Lo learns a lot that way.

No intervening over here. Usually if he's painting or something, I'll do my own picture alongside him. Though I do push back against *his* intervening in *my* artwork - he'll try to tell me what colors to use or what to make and I'm like, "No, you have your own paper where you can make whatever you want. You're not the boss of my art!" I'm very mature. :-)

With creative stuff, I don't intervene other than tell them not to color on the table/walls. I may suggest something if the older one asks for ideas, or help draw something specific or something difficult, but I mostly stay away since I want them to use their imaginations.

I don't even do 'footprint art' or anything like that - that's just the parent doing art with the child minimally participating. If my daughter asks for help with some kind of art project, I'm happy to assist. But that's it.

I don't intervene. I let my son do his own thing, regardless of the outcome. He actually gets more annoyed when I hover!

None for stuff like library crafts but a little more when we do stuff for things like hand/footprint art.

I don't do many art projects with LO but I'd like to think I let him do what he wants. When he colors I let him use whatever colors he wants and draw however he wants... But like at T-ball class, I will show him which base to run to if he runs the wrong way. But the whole point of that class is to teach them the rules of the game so it seems appropriate. It isn't a creative sport. ;)

When I was at LO's school party the other week there was a mom who was basically doing her LO's activity for him. They were making pumpkin faces with cut outs and he wasn't putting it right in the center how it "should be" so she was telling him no and was moving his pieces. In a really overly nice, high pitched voice....I was really giving the side eye (in my head) to that. I always let my LO do activities how she wants and only guide her if she asks for help.

I'm meaning more art type activities, if your LO wants to put the face upside down or color the sky pink, do you let them? Obviously not talking safety type activities where kids could get hurt!
