The only way to make such a big leap in salary in my industry is to move to a competitor, which I've done twice. You get the biggest bump when you do that, since you're more valuable to them than you are to your current company. It' skind of sad, but it's the reality. I've been at my current employer 4 years and I could easily make 20-30% more if I moved, but I'm treated so well here that I have absolutely no desire to. My salary has decreased by 15% since my first job! That's because I left a corporate job that was unrelated to my major/field of interest to take a job in my field of interest, which is journalism.
