I've done two showers with co-hosts, each with about 30 guests, and both times we each probably spent around $100 - $150.
We DIYed all the decorations, made our own food, made our own invitations, and made our own cake.

I am pretty frugal in everything that I do, but I did want a cute, somewhat coordinated/themed shower for my sister. I think I spent about $425-$450 including food for about 20 people. My mom and I made the food. The cupcakes came from Wegmans (grocery store). I think I have the budget a home, but it was something like this:

(I may be overestimating some costs/underestimating others)

Cupcakes - 2 dozen ~$25
Cupcake toppers - splurge $20
Groceries - $100
Fabric for table runners + table cloths - $50 (Needed table cloths anyway)
Flowers - $30
Balloons - $15
Favors - $60
Prizes - $20
Craft supplies/invitations - $30
Paper goods - $30
Memory book/Guest book - $15
Chair/table rental - $25

I've been involved in throwing a couple of showers, baby and wedding. Typically these were showers at a house, with no catered food. Major expenses in these cases worked out to be favors, alcohol if you are serving it, the cake, and more premium snacks (good cheese). We've always done DIY decor. I've always split the cost with a few other people and these showers in total probably didn't come in over $500 or $600, but it's been a few years so I could be a little off. I would say with 20 people you could come in under that amount.

@Weagle: those are my favorite type of events! I'm over the super-styled showers.

A cheap and cute decoration I saw once was when the hostess had gone to the used baby store and purchased a bunch of onesies. She hung them from a clothes line inside where the mom-to-be opened her presents. It created a nice focal point.

I've always done DIY decorations, but to thing too fancy. No one has wanted a Pinterest worthy shower yet. And the other hostesses have all chipped in with food. The last one was a couple's baby shower. It was a cookout at our house and we provided decor and a bunch of fruit. Other people brought burgers, others sides. That's pretty much the norm here.

I'm throwing a shower soon and am interested in this! I did a big shower before and split the cost of food, which was the biggest expense.

Ive actually never paid for a shower so I never kept track of budget. the only baby shower I've thrown was for my sil, it was at a baseball stadium and there's no way I could afford that. I did all the work with decorating and favors, the stadium provided food and entertainment, and my mom picked up the bill.

My mom and I threw my sister a shower. Luckily she paid for it. We had the food catered in and I DIY'd the decor. Fabric buntings and a diaper cake and we used vintage toys and books from my moms collection. The decor only cost me probably 100 bucks and the food maybe 250-300? Not bad! Oh and we had an open house style shower for probably 50 people.

I am going to host a baby shower later this year for a really good friend. I am excited about doing this but need a little guidance on a realistic budget!

How much have you spent on a shower for about 20 people? How did you split the budget between decor and food?
Did you cater the food or did you prepare everything yourself?
