we are in Pre-K 3 days a week for 3 hrs a day. I'd love a little more communication but they do a pretty decent job. We get a little bit of info at drop off & pick up. They also send out a private weekly blog that sums up the weeks activities, lots of pictures, and some quotes from the kids. If there are any injuries we get a phone call, even for minor things.

We moved at the beginning of the school year and my daughter (4 this month) is now in pre-school. So far, we haven't heard anything about behavior at all. The teacher is very accessible by email though, she emails parents every Friday to talk about what the kids have been doing, and every Friday she sends home a binder with the week's song or activity and sometimes asks us to add items like photos or drawings. At the end of every month, a binder comes home with an assessment of what DD has been working on that month, and it has photos of her doing the activities, along with a color-coded grading system for skills for a particular activity. I should also add that my DD takes the bus to and from school every day, so I've only met the teacher once in person at a school event. It is logistically very difficult to go to the school, so I wouldn't ever go unless there is an emergency or a planned event.

we get very little communication which frustrated me because where DD was from 2-3 yo gave us a whole run down of her day (and that continued up to pre-k). she goes 2 full days (9-4) and the first year, i never saw her actual "preschool" teacher because they didn't do after care. so i felt really out of the loop. when they finally did conferences, it was a lot of what we already knew about her, so that was good, but i kinda hated not knowing what was up. this year for actual pre-k, i requested the teacher that does after care so she's with her all day so i feel like i get a full run down of what she's up to more often. i don't need a full play by play, but how she napped or didn't, how she's paying attention, etc. is helpful and also helps me to feel her out for the rest of the day. DD2 goes to the same place for the same 2 days and it's kinda weird not knowing what she's up to exactly (just turned 2), but i do get to hear a little about her day from her teacher at pick up.

@Madison43: we are in a daycare center so pickup is a rolling event, not all at once. If everyone was picked up at the same time I would not expect to get info. But if I pick up at 4:30 and they are open until 6, there is usually time to do a quick check in.

@Foodnerd81: for what it is worth our K has an app for communication with parents and I feel like I know more about what they are doing day to day some weeks now compared to last year.

@MamaCate: conferences are next week. I’m over thinking things since I am planning to send her to K in the fall, as one of the youngest (July bday, sept 1 cut off) so I am anxious to hear what they have to say about that. Holding younger kids back is really common around here which concerns me. But yeah, I can wait five more days. I’m glad to know what’s “normal” going into them.

My son was in a private preschool, it wasn't a daycare in that it didn't have children all day. We got detailed reports of incidents, particularly if there was a nurse visit involved.

@Foodnerd81: we do half day pre-k also. We get a weekly one page “newsletter” summarizing what the class did that week and including some photos. But no formal communication about what happened with my child on a daily basis - just a quick “she had a great day.” The only time the school has called to communicate an incident was when it required first aid (ice pack, etc,). Pretty sure it’s normal at this point.

ETA - I just read through all the responses and am surprised how many people get info at pickup. Our teachers won’t have anything more than a quick “hello and great day” because they are making sure every child is collected by their adult safely. You can wait around and talk after, but not during pickup.

@Mama Bird: that sounds really frustrating! How is a hungry kid going to have the energy to concentrate and learn? I am so sorry.

@Foodnerd81: good luck at the cofneeence! At our center you could always request a conference intermittently if you felt it was needed so find out if that is true for you. And you could ask them about what to expect for communication.

@Ajsmommy: oh since the initial post was about pre-k I assumed your child was 4. That does seem more ridiculous for the teacher to be concerned about. My DD is a slow eater so we did have some unfinished meals. But in K there are more moving pieces (lunch is farther away, more kids, etc.) so it seems like another learning curve.

This is really helpful- I guess at more normal than I thought to get little info. It’s fristrating because I keep getting the feeling that they think my kid is a problem but not too much info to back it up- but I realize I’m probably over sensitive when it’s my own kid. I’ll wait for conferences to see how it goes.

@MamaCate: yes, we give him snack! There's supposed to be a snack break in school, and another one in afterschool, but he brings it home half the time. He says stuff like "I didn't have time to eat it" and "I kept raising my hand but no one had time to help me." We've talked to the teacher and the afterschool counselor, but it keeps happening. Ugh.

@Mama Bird: do they have snack? DD gets 2 ten minute snack breaks (we send snack in her backpack every day). I have learned to pack less food to reduce waste. I agree that the attitude seems to be “if they’re hungry they’ll learn to eat faster” but that obviously doesn’t work for everyone!

@MamaCate: oh the eating quickly thing :crying: we have way too many days when DS goes all day on no breakfast, just school lunch and a slice of apple. That's from 7:30 to 6 pm. If I fed my kid like that at home, he'd be taken away by CPS in no time flat, but in public school it's OK, no one is quite responsible. If you don't eat fast, you don't eat, and no one cares if you're in K.

@Foodnerd81: we get incident reports for anything that leaves a mark, as far as I can tell. This is true from the baby room to pre-k as we have been in the same center throughout. So this can just be “fell down, gave ice, tlc” and notes the location of the injury. We also get bite reports if there is biting. For behaviors it was usually more conversations at pick up and drop off and sometimes I had to seek someone out if there was an issue. Each teacher and classroom seems to have their own vibe.

@Ajsmommy: my DD is in K now and they only have 25 minutes for lunch so eating quickly is a school skills around here. Maybe that is what the teacher meant about not having an hour? I can’t imagine leaving a kid to try to eat for that long but that is another thing.

It's kind of a mix. Now that she's in the preschool class at her daycare (which is also attached to an elementary school and a grad school in education) we don't get basic caregiving updates--like I don't know what she ate for snack, how long she napped, where she went for outing. But we get daily little snippets (like 2-3 sentences) /anecdotes about a highlight and how it's related to what she's working on developmentally. I can usually chat with her teacher during drop off if something is up, but it's hectic with other kids and parents coming and going too.

We do get calls about incidents, like I got a call when she was bit and when she tripped and bumped her knee.

We are in a public Pre-K that’s at an elementary school. We hear almost nothing about behavior (Unless it’s major I guess) or minor injuries. The teacher has a blog that she posts pictures on but other than that, we talk at conferences and that’s it.

Very little info, but the director kept an open line of communication by email. The couple of times we had a problem, I was able to either walk in and talk to the teachers, or email the director to straighten the matter out. And of course it helped that DS was old enough to tell me there's a problem in the first place.

I have found that it really depends on the teacher. My oldest son's first year at preschool, I noticed that he had a huge egg on his forehead as soon as we got home and the teacher never said a word about it to me. He had fallen bumped his head on the tile. I was pissed. The following year, he tripped walking down the hallway and had a similar bump on his forehead. The teacher called me asap, assured me he was ok but that I'd probably want to get him checked out, had an ice pack on it, and filled out an incident report.
I have also worked in the classrooms and usually if it's nothing serious, the teacher will tell the parent at pick up. One kid kind of tipped over while he was sitting but bumped his head on some blocks on the way down. Not at all serious but he was upset about it so the teacher got him an ice pack and told the parent at pick up.

As far as ACTUAL info day to day, we usually hear whether or not he had a good nap, because its been an ongoing issue, and other than that, we don't get much. I do ask the teachers to pay attention to certain things for me and tell me about them, for instance DS1 was speech delayed for a while, so I wanted to know if he had outbursts or had frustrations dealing with other kids and if he did, I wanted to know. If I have suspicions of an issue, I ask the director and teacher and they will usually work collaborative to observe for a few days and then get back to me.

Not a lot. But I mean as a whole. We had one incident, with heads hitting during play time and I got a call. It was quick and just to say that she bumped heads, ice was applied and she was ok and went back to play. When I picked her up that day there was no more mention of it. But I had gotten the call.

DD started preschool in Sept and I feel kind of "out of control" or like we are just floating by. We have a teacher conference coming up so I hope to get some answers there. I feel like the teacher that is there at pick up and I don't communicate well. She will say hi, DD had a great day or an awesome day and that's about it. One time she said DD had a few reminders and missed snack bc she didn't pick up and said she didn't want snack.. but later wanted it and once she told me DD didn't eat her lunch and took an hour sitting there and her yogurt had to be thrown away and that at school she won't have that much time (??).. than that her tummy hurt... (I thought well that probably explains why she didn't eat!). I feel like the info I am given isn't necessary or constructive... or really an "update"

One time dd had an activity paper in her bag that was blank, when I asked the teacher about it the next day she said "oh that probably means we moved on and she didn't finish.." ??? Not quite clear what that means... was DD goofing off? Not paying attention? Didn't know how to do it (which is what dd said when I asked at home!!)... so why isn't the teacher helping her or TEACHING her?

Anyway, as you can see I have other issues.. but I do feel that I dont' get much info and I'm trying to get used to it. As I'm pretty sure this is how it will be from here on out.

it's just hard to get much from DD bc she's three....

I don't know how public pre-K handles things, but our daycare has the same policies from infant through pre-K, and if there was a rock tossing incident, there would have been an ouchie report and an explanation from the teacher/director.

How did she make it feel like it was your daughter's fault for another kid throwing a rock at her? That would irk me more than the act itself.

We don't get much. We get some pictures and updates throughout the day of what they're working on and maybe a worksheet that he did once/week, but unless an incident report has to be filed (that goes to the state), we don't get a ton on his day unless we specifically ask.

How much info do you get from your child’s preK school? My daughter is 4 and I’ve been getting half reports about things that happen and I’m wondering if I’m expecting too much or if this is weird.

For example, there was an incident where another kid threw rocks on the playground and hit her in the face. She wasn’t injured, but the teacher just told me in the middle of the hallway at pick up and left me with the feeling like my kid was at fault but there was so much going on I didn’t press it. (And I’m not upset that a kid threw rocks- they are 4 and 5, they do dumb things and need to learn how to handle things, it’s more the way the teacher told me).

Just curious. It’s just half day preK, not full time day care or anything.
