Input on price, reliability, and cost of maintenance. I gave no opinion when my husband bought an audi (it was before we were married) and now I regret it because duh... german car = ridiculous maintenance costs. Not to mention it breaks ALL THE EFFING TIME. So now every few months it costs us hundreds (at least) to fix. He can pick out anything he wants for his next car but no more cars with expensive maintenance costs (luckily he is as fed up as I am and is already talking toyota. Thank god. lol)

Haha, timely as my husband’s car just died last week and he had to buy a new one on short notice. We each have our own car and honestly, I don’t really feel we get much say in what the other picks - - as long as it’s within the agreed upon budget. Similarly, I don’t want him picking my car for me – I’m the one driving it every day, I’ll get something I love thankyouverymuch.

My husband isn’t a researcher (he’s an impulse buyer – so dangerous when car shopping lol) so he tells me what he wants and I do the research on fair price, etc, but I don’t veto the kind of car or features he wants, even if they are not what I would want for myself.

Safe, meets out general practical needs, and in budget would be the only things I'd feel strongly about. If there was any possibility I'd ever be driving it, it would need to be automatic and I'd want to test drive to see if I could reach the pedals and see the mirrors at the same time. I am a shortie with an extra short torso and a lot of cars that are made for the American market are difficult to impossible to see out of and operate at the same time.

For my particular husband, I'd defer to him. I love to research, but he has me beat hands down in the car-research department. He's the type to research and agonize for months and months about a decision, and he only pays cash for cars, so I don't have to worry about the financial part.

But this kind of depends on the people involved.

I had some say (price point, ect.) but overall it was his decision since it was his car. (however, he does now wish he would have went with the one I had picked out instead of the one he went with, which I knew would happen.) It's hard for me to take a step back, but as long as DH makes an informed decision I'm willing to let go a bit, sometimes DH rushes things, and that doesn't work well for my type A personality ;)

We're talking now about getting DH a new car. His is older, though mine is costing us a ton of money at the moment. I think we'll both end up needing new cars very soon.

We both want a say in what we get. It's both of our money that's paying for it, and even though he'll primarily drive it, it's going to likely be the family car that we drive everywhere. I'd like to enjoy it as well! We usually make big money decisions like this together!

My husband looks into cars all the time even though we're not quite in the market and he wants me to get an Outback. You'll be good with either of those choices! Last time my husband got a car I had input because it's meant to be our family car, he has a separate work vehicle. He loves that stuff though so I trusted him and did no research. I think as long as one of you looks into it, it's fine. I see it as one of the advantages of being married- I don't have to think about everything!

I'd say it doesn't really matter except a few years ago, I picked out a car I wanted and bought it - and then a year later my husband and I ended up switching cars. He was really lucky I chose a car that worked well for his circumstances.

Meh, it's not like my husband is out there buying a sportscar. He knows he needs to be able to have our son back there in a seat, so that limits his choices.

I don't really care. I was in this situation two years ago--DH's explorer died and he needed a new small SUV, fast. We had talked about him getting a new Escape (it's not like he was running out and buying a luxury or sports car), and I was being induced the next day, so he just went and bought it.

Similarly, I picked out my CRV with minimal input--after all, she's mine :)

Ironically, guess who the salesman harassed about having the spouse's input *eye roll*

I'd definitely expect to have input regarding the price. I'd also insist that he get a very safe car (especially since the roads around us are terrible in winter, and he's not the world's greatest driver.) The only other input I'd want is to ensure that it's a practical choice that meets our needs. For example, I drive a fairly small car, and he currently drives a compact SUV. If he wanted to replace it with another small car, we wouldn't have a larger vehicle if we ever need to move anything.

Other than that, it would be entirely up to him. As long as it's safe and is a practical choice for our family, I don't care about the make or model or what kinds of features it has. If your husband is a practical guy to begin with, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about :)

@78h2o: my husband is a Subaru guy. He had a WRX for nearly ten years that was falling apart at the seams and has has his heart set on a new impreza for years. My two criteria were 1. can the kids car seats fit in it RF and Ff? and 2. Can we afford this? because he wanted the 2015 model. They do and we could, and other than pushing him to get the blue car I kept my mouth shut which is normally pretty hard for me to do. :silly:

I don't even like DH grocery shopping because he just pulls the first thing off the shelf to be done quickly (sometimes getting the wrong thing!) whereas I check the unit prices, if the brand is good, what's on sale, etc etc. Good luck!!

We worked out our budget together, but I did all the research and negotiations for our car (online was super easy and I had a record of all of our numbers)- a Forester (LOVE it!) and he test drove it and our other choices and was fine with my decision.

We switch off on our cars- whoever has the kids, has the Forester and the other car is our work commute car. When he gets a new car, he will have the final choice as long as it is something I feel safe driving.

Giving up full control of a decision is not a bad thing, and it won't be the last time with a little one on the way. Trust your partner (because he's choosing an awesome car) :silly:

Thanks everyone! You are making me feel better about possibly just leaving it up to him. Usually we make all decisions with 50/50 input, but I just don't feel up to doing all the research. I know he'll make a good choice. I am more frugal and generally get better deals that he does, but that's because he values his time more than he values getting the best vs. a good deal. A part of me worries his search might not have been exhaustive, but I know I can overdo it (man, I love me some spreadsheets/pro vs con lists)...so, I think I'm going to defer to him...for pretty much the first time, ever. Lol.

As long as it's within our financial budget then I would leave it up to him. Dh is very practical and researches a ton on his own and I trust his judgment. (We are in the midst of car hunting.) I have no desire to do extra research.

As long as it meets our needs and is in budget, he can buy whatever.

We currently have a two seater truck, and my only criteria for the replacement vehicle is that it costs less than $30,000 and has room for a car seat.

Well, I love our outback and I primarily drive it mostly because DH drives a lot and we don't want to put miles on the new car. But I want to be involved because I would still be in the car and want it to be a good complement to the car I drive!
