@mediagirl: we have a 130# Newfoundland so there aren't many people who will take her into their house. Besides, we also have a cat who is fine at home alone over the weekend but wouldn't be fine for our upcoming two week vacation.

DH has arranged for a friend's son to come take care of the dog next weekend (I'm not sure what we are paying him).

$9 a day just isn't happening for anyone at all reliable, IMHO. We pay about $20 a day for someone to stay here (plus provide food like "you can have whatever you need in our pantry") and we would pay $40-50 to board AT LEAST (but we have 3 small dogs.) We pay close to $80 a day at WDW to board them when our house sitter can't.

There is a pet service here in town that will come to your house, let your dog out, spend time with him, etc, for $20/visit. I agree you could do $9 for a kid....

$9 is pretty low. We board our dog at our vet's office and pay around $28 a day ($16 daily board fee+two extra 15 minute playtimes at $6 each). Pet care isn't something you should cheap out on.

$9 is not reasonable at all. Most dog walkers in my area charge $15 just to come by and walk the dog once.

What type of dog do you have? Are you part of a rescue organization in your area? I was able to find a wonderful woman who takes our dog into her home when we go away. For 2 dogs, it was $35/day. For one, she would probably charge what our local kennel does which is $22/day.

The only time we had to pay for someone was during our wedding because everyone we knew was there. She came once to walk the dog and feed him. It was $17.

We paid $40/night at the kennel, which I do think is really high. Our neighbors paid $15 for a pet sitter, but she was in high school and her parents helped her. :)

The only way I think that would work was if it was a neighborhood kid who stopped by twice a day. Personally I know that would not be enough for my dog - he would need someone to stay with him.

Your other option is to ask a friend, and explain you can't really pay, but buy them a bottle of wine or another smallish gift, and offer to repay the favor in the future. We have had friends pet sit for one or two days and we just took them to brunch.

Our petsitter wouldn't watch our cat for half an hour for $9. Sorry to be blunt, but that's crazy low. And, you get what you pay for. I wouldnt trust anyone to actually take care of or spend any time with my pet for $9/day.

@honeybee: I think there is an online community board but I don't know that I would trust any of the kids in our neighborhood. Our dog, although huge (130# Newfoundland), is very gentle and well behaved. Our normal dog sitter actually took her back to her house on Thanksgiving day and Griffin just laid around (her normal routine).

@LittleK: that was his thought but I brought up that they have to have a parent drive them to our house 3x a day

Does your neighborhood have a community message board or website? My little sister used to pet sit for our neighbors for about $5/day and I've noticed some flyers from kids in our neighborhood for pet sitting and walking for $5-10/day. I think I would do this if we could trust our dogs at someone else's house. :)

@Foodnerd81: that was my thoughts too, sometimes (particularly when $ is involved) DH gets stuck in what things cost when he was growing up. I'm sure back in the 1980s $9/day for a dog sitter was good money; but then I've never had a dog before and always had family around to look in on our cats so what do I know. Oh they don't even have to take her for a walk, just let her out in the backyard for a little while; but still seems too low to me.

$9 seems really, really low to me. We only boarded my dog twice-- once at this woman's apartment, and once at a kennel, which was something like 20-30 a day I think. We've had a dog walker come every once in a great while, when we are in a pinch, and even that was at least $12 for one walk-- but that was in an expensive neighborhood in Boston. $20 a day for 3 walks and 2 feedings seems like a good deal to me.

We are going away next weekend and while in the past we've taken our dog with us, my parents have recently declared their house a "pet free zone" so that is no longer an option. DH has also decided that he no longer wants to pay what we had previously been paying for someone to watch her ($33/day when at a kennel, $20-25/day for a house/pet sitter). He doesn't feel we should have to pay anymore than $9/day.

While it would be great to have someone stay at the house with her so she doesn't get lonely at minimum we need someone to let her out first thing in the morning and then early and late evening as well as feed her. Am I crazy in thinking that $20 is reasonable or is he for thinking $9 is?

Where are you and what do you pay for a pet sitter?
