Not sure the price, but our local pool is a bit ridiculous to get in. I've heard it is many years' wait, and some people suggest getting on the list when you get engaged. I just looked, there are 1000+ people/families on the waiting list. No thanks!

We pay $30 annually for the community league membership and it comes with 10 passes to the community pool and skate tags (for our outdoor skating rink). We also have a spray deck at our playground, but that's free.

Ours are part of our parks and recreation department. We have a really nice aquatic complex with 3 pools, including a play pool with a slide and splash pad, then several smaller pools. They charge on a per-use basis -- $4.50 for kids, $5 for adults at the big complex, $3.50 for kids, $4 for adults at the others. I like that you don't have to pay a big membership fee and can just pay as you go.

ETA we don't live in a housing community so these are basically "public pools" in the city that you pay to get access to.

Wow in grateful for our suburb--we pay 80 for 1st family member and 50 for each child over 5 years old. It's a really nice updated pool too. I son think I could stomach the crazy pies you all have mentioned!!

We have about 5 neighborhood pools that we have access to through our HOA. We pay $180 quarterly, but that includes everything else than an HOA pays for as well.

@MrsCB: Oh my gosh! That is terrible!! Is it in a well to do area? Even if you do well for yourselves that is CRAZY...might be better just to build your own pool :)

The houses around ours are mostly townhouses and duplexes and the pool itself is somewhat in the woods. I think that is another reason why there is such a disconnect with the pricing for me...doesn't really add up to the area, IMO.

I think ours is a really good deal. It's $250/summer for the first several years for the whole family (even if you have 4 or 5 kids) and then after you 'pay in' it drops to $150/summer. There's a lap pool, a regular pool with diving boards and slide, and a big baby pool. There;s shuffle board/tennis/bball courts, a playground with big sandbox and a game room.

Ours is insane. Sometimes I really hate this area:

$130 one time, non refundable "initiation fee"
$700 bond (refundable when you leave the membership)
$950 annual fee
$75 "capital improvement fund fee" (um, what?)
$50 application fee
=$1905 total up front

I'm sorry, we do very well for ourselves, but that just seems insane.

@Honeybee: I'm not sure the rec center makes sense yet, but down the road it does! They do offer daily passes for the whole center or just the pool, so we can still use it without having to completely join :). We did swim lessons there last year and DS loved it! And this conversation just reminded me why overall the rec center is a better option...I'm allergic to chlorine and the rec center changed over to a salt water system. Swimming in a "regular" pool daily all summer long is just not an option (I usually just suck it up and then suffer for days after hehe).

@yin: Yikes! Sounds similar to what we have going on in our community pool. I'm glad you have other options and totally agree about the unattended children!

I wish we had a neighborhood pool! Our neighborhood was talking about putting one in, but apparently it didn't pan out. We had one growing up and it was amazing. In my town, there are only a few public pools, and you have to pay for EACH. One is 250$ for a family membership, and one is 150$. I really wanted LO to have access to a pool, but who knows what we will do.

Our apartment complex has a pool. we pay a flat rate of about $150 per year for all members in our household. It is an outdoor pool and only open in the summer

i think your pool sounds too expensive. I would rather pay to go to a water park a few times in the summer than pay for your pool

I keep thinking I'll join one day when I can afford it. It cost $325 to just buy a bond to keep your spot, which is refundable once you decide to opt out. Then the annual fee is $380 plus $25 for each child. That's $730 up front cost... oye. The good thing is that the pool is in our neighborhood. By in our neighborhood, I mean it's right down the street, and I can imagine my kids walking to the pool everyday in the summer. The pool also provides free swim lessons.

Of course there are public pools around, but usually kids are left unattended and it's not as family friendly. I bring LO to my in-law's neighborhood pool, which they pay for in their HOA fees. Not many people go, and it doesn't have the same feel as the pool in my neighborhood.

That seems super expensive! Our HOA maintains a pool that is part of our monthly fees ($28/month). Before moving here we were also paying a membership at the county rec center which has amazing pool facilities (lap pools, toddler pools, a water slide, an outside splash pool and pad, etc...); I think it was $35/month for unlimited access for the whole family.

They mail out a form to fill out with the number of people in your household and then send bracelets that we have to wear each time we go. It's a nice pool too. It's really large and has diving boards and a couple water slides. There is a wading pool for LOs and huge hot tub also.

There is an community pool less than a block from our house and I would LOVE to use it since it is so close and within easy walking distance, but I feel the membership prices are outrageous!

Membership needs to be approved by the board of governors and you must join for the whole season, there are no daily passes for non-members. The application fee is $25/adult and there is also a $75/adult certificate fee plus the actual pool membership for our family would range from $405-445...so in total we are talking ~$500-650 depending on if we do a 2 or 3 person family membership.

The thing that gets me is this pool isn't that nice! The fencing and tables are all rusted and rundown. The pavilion is very old, gravel drive/parking lot, etc. To put it this way...it was one of my least favorite pools for swim meets growing up. The pool itself is fine and clean, but the grounds are not maintained well. It's a shame because it is so close and DS would love it!

There is a public pool also really close, but not within walking distance. Full membership for that is only $125 for myself and DS is free until 3, plus they offer daily fees so we could go without having to join. Much better, but I hate not being able to use the one right at our house.

How much are the outdoor pools in your area?

--I wasn't sure where to put this, Feel free to move it to a more appropriate board :)
