Where do you live? Technically a townhouse, but we don't share any walls with the other unit
Location? Suburbs of Boston
How many bedroom/bath? 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath, finished basement
Do you know square footage of your home? 1900 (not sure if that includes our basement or not)
What kind of heat? Gas
How much is your monthly power/heating bill? Winter months, Summer months? Our last gas bill was $142.62 and electricity was $174.88. It flip flops in the summer/winter but I budget $300 total per month. We turn our heat down to 60 (and AC up to 78) if we're not using that zone. We have 2 zones: 1 for upstairs, and 1 for downstairs and basement.

@Septca We are in the DC area, too, also in an 1800 sf townhouse. Our electric bill is $300 this month...I nearly fainted! I'll have to try turning it down to 64 at night. I have kept it at 66 all day/night for the last 2 months. We're home during the day and I think LO and I will freeze if it's 64 in the house all day!

@dojo: @HLK208: Yup, we are using PGE, too. Man, my apartment power bill sucks. Glad I'm getting out!
I'm going to call PGE today and see if they are able to give me more accurate numbers on the house we are planning on moving.

@HLK208: Oh, good point about the furnace, windows and leaks.

I was talking to my sister and she said we could close the vents to one of the rooms we don't plan on using. That should reduce the heating bill so I don't have to heat the whole house.

@bluestriped bee: it really depends if the furnace is energy efficient, if there are double pane windows that are properly sealed/caulked and if there's any areas for heat to escape. Oh, and it depends if the heating ducts are in good shape.

In my old house, we didn't have a cap on the fire place and we had a few holes in our duct work. Our house was much smaller but our gas bill was $150-200 every month. It was an old house but had a new furnace just to give you an idea. We bought a new construction home in April and we've saved so much with everything being more energy efficient.

Boo! We asked the realtor and he said gas & electric bill will be between $250-$350 for the winter months. If it doesn't get too cold, it should be closer to the $250 side. Not too bad considering that's what I was expecting. Maybe I should call the energy company and see if they will give me more than an estimate.

It's a split level home and I got the DH to ask the realtor how many thermostats the house has. I was hoping there would be at least two. One for the top level and one for the bottom. Realtor said there is only one thermostat because the baseboard are not separate. So we'll have to heat the whole house. :/ Hmmm...

Do you know square footage of your home? 2650
What kind of heat? Gas
How much is your monthly power/heating bill? Summer: Gas is $9 (monthly minimum charge) and Electric is around 80-90. Winter: Electric is around 50-60, Gas is SUPER dependent on weather, could be $50, could be $150.

The energy efficiency of your home makes a huuuuge difference. Our house now is pretty big but is very energy efficient. My last house was half a duplex (which should be cheaper bc there are only 3 exterior walls) that was less than half this size and my utility bills were more than double mine here because it was an old place that was super drafty and didn't have enough insulation.

How many bedroom/bath? 3 bedrooms/2.5 bathrooms, 3 stories
Do you know square footage of your home? 1,800
What kind of heat? Electric
How much is your monthly power/heating bill? Winter: Our electric bill is about $100-125*, which includes heat and electricity (all appliances except our stove). Summer: $300-350 for electric A/C (damn those DC summers!!!). We don't use our heat or A/C in the spring or fall.

*Last winter I tested a couple of different methods for heating our house - turns out it is *way* cheaper to turn the thermostat down at night and during the day (64-ish) and crank it up in the mornings and evenings (70-72) than to keep it at 68 all the time. Who knew? And it's *so* much more comfortable this way.

Your local utility companies may (should) be able to give you a more accurate look at what the utility bills were for the home you are looking at for the past year. If you’re working with a realtor, I would ask them for this info.

Where do you live? House (energy efficient home build 2012)
Location? Southern Maine
Bed/Bath: 4 bed/3 bath
Square Feet: 2600 (+ basement)
Heat: Propane
Power Bill: $100-$200/month (includes space heater use and I leave a lot of lights on)
Heating bill: $500+/month in the winter, about $100/month in the summer. Last month was $607, gulp. Propane and oil are ungodly expensive. We are installing solar panels and a mini-split heat pump this year in order to dump propane.

We previously had gas heat, which was a reasonable expense (about $200/month in winter and almost nothing in summer).

@Bao: Wow! Your house is 3 times the size of my apartment and your bill is about the same as mine! I do know that our heat in our apartment isn't that efficient.

We are thinking of moving into a house and one of the houses we are looking at has both gas and electric. I believe it's a gas furnace and I think the large appliances are electric.

Just wondering how much everyone pays. We are talking to the realtor to see if they can give us some numbers from the previous tenants. The house we are looking at is double the space so I'm thinking my power bill will double.

I know you can't really compare because it depends location, how large your house, if you use gas/electric/oil/solar panels. Also, some winters or summers might be colder or warmer than average.

Also, I heard if you live in a townhouse and have neighbors that your heating bill is usually less because you are insulated by your neighbors.

If you could fill this form out I think it would help me sorta compare.

Where do you live? House, Condo, townhouse, apartment
Location? Closest city
How many bedroom/bath?
Do you know square footage of your home?
What kind of heat? Gas, Electric, Oil, Solar panels, wind power ;)
How much is your monthly power/heating bill? Winter months, Summer months?

I can start:

Where do you live? Apartment complex
Location? Suburbs of Seattle
How many bedroom/bath? 2 bed/2 bath
Do you know square footage of your home? ~980 sq ft
What kind of heat? Electric, forced air
How much is your monthly power/heating bill? This past month my power bill came $180. Got pretty cold the past month. Lowest was 30 degrees probably. Although, compared to the rest of the country, it's no where near 0. The month of November was $130. During the summer month, my bill will be under $100. Maybe $60-$80. Luckily, our summers aren't too warm so we don't need AC.
