I'm a lawyer, but I'm never in a courtroom so there was no need to spend $$ on a suit. I think I bought several pairs of dress pants from Motherhood Maternity for about $25 each. I got by with just one pair of jeans (on sale at Kohl's). I only had a handful of sweaters and knit tops (maybe 10?) so I got pretty sick of wearing the same thing over and over again, but I was determined not to spend a ton of $$ on a wardrobe I'd only use for a few months. I also tried to buy pieces that were more flow-y and forgiving around the middle but not necessarily "maternity" so I could wear them post-baby (and here I am, 5.5 months PP and still wearing them... I miss my old body. I should have avoided buying some stuff, especially dresses, early on, because the stuff I bought early didn't fit by the end of my pregnancy. I find this pretty good considering DD was born April 1 so my wardrobe was fall/winter and am due Sept 16 so I had to buy spring/summer this time around. Luckily I can wear jeans to work and was able to make use of most of my bottoms from the first time.
