@Bao: Oh I don't miss those days. :(
@ladyfingers: @mrs. wagon: This sounds like me when I was single! I have enough clothes I could go a month+ w/out having to do laundry, especially when I lived in an apt. and had to take it to the laundry room and wait.
@yoursilverlining: Glad to know! I'm pretty good about attacking stains as soon as we have any.
@Thehistoryofus: Definitely cloth diapering would increase the laundry frequency a lot! We're not going that route though...
@Crumbs: LOL! Finally someone who did what I've kind of thought cold be a good trick! More clothes = less laundry! :)

We have SO much more laundry now that DD is here. Unfortunately, we live in an apartment so we have to pay $1 to wash and .75 to dry. We do 3-4 loads about twice a week (the washers are small), and it really adds up. Regular daytime clothes, DH's work clothes, DD's clothes, blankets, towels, etc. We use our towels several times, I wear jeans and sweatpants/pajama pants a few times (DH too), but it still adds up!

Honestly, our laundry hasn’t increased that much. (Maybe I’m doing something wrong?? Haha) We’re lucky in that LO doesn’t have many blowouts at all; but in cases of possible stains I just rinse out the item really well and spray it with Shout, wait and wash it like normal and we’ve never had a stain set in. Her clothes and washcloths are so little that she only has about 1-2 loads per week of items and we just have our usual amount of items as well. So, our laundry has increased by maybe 2 loads per week?

Yeah I'm perplexed by this too and not really looking forward to it. I do laundry once EVERY OTHER week right now, pre-baby. DH has a ton of clothes and I can stretch stuff 2 weeks (though not as much lately with maternity clothes). I can't imagine going up to multiple loads per week -- our w/d is down a flight of stairs, so yuck.

We definitely do more laundry now with a LO. We used to get away with 2-3 loads a week but now it's more like 5-6. I use cloth diapers so I'm washing at least every 2-3 days just for that.

@Crumbs: I agree, this is a huge advantage to have a lot of clothes. Typically by the end of the week, I'm like She doesn't have anything to wear. But then I do laundry with a TON of outfits (because you can fit so much in one load) and her closet is full again!

Diapers - Three Times a Week
Baby Clothes - Once a Week
Towels/Bedding - Once a week
Husbands work clothes - Once a week
Jeans/Tshirts/etc - Every other week
Work clothes - Every other week

So that is about 6-7 loads a week!

I wash diapers every other day, DS's sheets, changing pad cover, etc whenever they are dirty (which is frequently), clothes when they are dirty or sweaty and/or he runs out. DH's get washed when his hamper is full, mine usually get washed when I run out of stuff to wear (which is frequently) or if I can throw a few pieces in DS's or DH's laundry.

I made sure I didn't "have" to do laundry more than I used to. So I bought LO more clothes :) If it's just her home clothes I don't care about stains plus she (I know just when I write this I'll jinx it ... ) hardly has blowouts.

I do one or two loads of DS stuff a week but I find I have to wash my own clothes much more often, before DS I could wear the same pair of jeans quite a few times without washing but now everything gets stained by spit up, drool, poop or snot so quickly. I also have fewer items to wear (nursing friendly) so feel like I need to do laundry more often

Along with what everyone else said, I also find I wash my tops more than normal b/c of how often he spits up on my shirts! Some mornings I go through 3 shirts before I decide it's a lost cause and just wear a spit-up-on'd shirt for the rest of the day :).

He goes through a lot of clothes too, but it doesn't matter so much cause each item is so small! He does go through a lot of washcloths, recieving blankets and the like. Also there are always random baby things to wash like new stuffies, terry cloth teething toys, car seat canopies, etc!

I do about 5-7 loads a week (small washer) -- but that is including cloth diapers, too.

Thanks for all the responses ladies! I guess one of the big differences is the the stains (as DH and I don't really stain our own clothes). @Coco Bee: @mrs. wagon: Both your replies were really good at explaining a lot! We already do most loads on cold cycle anyways, so that's good to know you wash LOs on cold too!

It's about stains for us. The longer it sits the less likely it's coming out even if I treat it. We also run out of things. They grow out of sizes so quick so we try to only buy what we need, but then we end up needing to do laundry. Finally, 4yr old Dd has favorite dresses she wants to wear and gets very upset if the one she wants is not clean. We do a load every other day and more on the weekend.

I do diaper loads 3x a week, and about 4 loads per week (2 cold washes for dark/delicates and 2 warm/hot washes). Ever since she started solids, the laundry has been piling up! Also, my clothes constantly get stains from her grubby hands or spit up. :(

I mainly do laundry more frequently because of stains. With newborn poop and things like pasta sauce, if you don't wash them pretty quickly then you're guaranteed a stain! If I'm not doing a load that night then I'll just soak it and try to put some soap in the stain, but then it pretty much has to go into the wash the next day or maybe the day after that at the latest...

Also right now we only have 2 swaddles (we switched to the Woombie) so if one gets dirty or smells, we have the other to switch to, but then we have to wash the dirty one quickly in case the other one gets poo on it. With sleep sacks I always have 3 in each size, but since we won't be using the Woombie for too much longer I don't want to buy 3!!

The good news is that especially with kids laundry, the loads are much smaller (so you can use less water on a lower setting) and I always do cold wash so at least we're not using hot water. And little clothing is sooooo much easier to fold :)

I never noticed a change in our utilities but I was doing a load nearly every day.

Now that we moved somewhere where we pay for laundry and it's down the hall; we do about 2 loads a week and really stretch our clothes/towels!!

I find I use a lot more towels and washcloths for LO. He takes a bath every night, he makes a lot of messes, and cleaning up after mealtime uses a washcloth (1 washcloth per meal (they get really dirty) equals three washcloths a day!).

Also clothes: he does rewear dress shirts and jeans if he doesn't get them dirty, but onesies are never worn more than once. In the early months he would spit up on his clothes so much we changed him about once a day. He had very few NB clothes so we did a load of NB laundry each day to ensure he had enough outfits. Same with 0-3. But by 3-6 mos the laundry amount did go down as he had more clothes and he was in that size for much longer (still is at 8 months!).

There there is the rest of the household laundry, and yours and DH's laundry in addition to the accumulation of towels, baby clothes, sheets and blankets :)

One of the things I hear moms & dads lament about the most is how much laundry they have to do. I was just wondering (as I put a load in), WHY do you suddenly have SO MUCH laundry?
I know kids get dirty and babies need to change like 3xs a day, but is the main reason why there's a need to do laundry so frequently?

My thoughts:
- Run out of clothes?
- Smells so bad (i.e. "blowouts")
- Baby/Kids create a loads worth of laundry a day?
- etc?

I'm thankful we have a w & d, but not looking forward to the higher water bill (especially in the Summer when we get higher rates b/c of droughts!)
