@mediagirl: Ugh, I'm kind of shopping around for a new day care, but it's tough because we want her in a centre that speaks French, so there's only about 3 in the area and they all have massive wait lists... which is why she kinda can do whatever she wants. She's going to start at this one, but the most "concession" they would make is for me to bring a schedule of what days she'll be there that week on Monday when we arrive, but she's more willing to tolerate an "emergency drop in" if the space is open on a day we've indicated she's not coming than being absent on a day we've paid for, which makes no sense to me. Newest development though is that my parents moved into our city (from five hours away) and my dad is a real estate agent with a somewhat open schedule, so if we've given the schedule for the week of days she'll be away, and DH gets an emergency call out, my dad can likely take her if the day care can't. I still totally don't understand how she can get away with giving away our spot without refunding us for the day, but her argument is that it's a monthly rate, not a daily rate, unless you're doing drop in. So, we're somewhat looking into a live-in nanny. But we're going to try and see if we can make this work for a bit.

This is messed up. If you're paying for full-time and aren't receiving a refund on the days your LO won't be there, then there should be no reason you have to tell them in advance if she's going to be there or not.

Some days Xander doesn't go to daycare because he's sick or whatever and I don't even bother telling them! They'll figure it out when he doesn't show up, haha. I only tell them in advance (like the day before) if he's going to be late or if I'm picking him up early. And yeah, if we're using vacation, that's in advance. But otherwise, no. Just no.

DH doesn't work until 12:30 and so the time that he brings E in varies a lot day to day depending on what DH has to do in the morning. Sometimes E will nap at home and not go in until 3pm. Our daycare has never had a problem with it, we pay for fulltime care and so they should be prepared whether or not we're there.

I would kick up a HUGE fuss if they told me they needed that kind of notice. If you're paying for the spot, then they need to hold it. If they're going to fill your spot, then it's ridiculous that you would pay for it also. Frankly, that would be enough for me to find a new daycare.

Agree with PP, that sounds strange. We are asked to give as much notice as possible and they specifically ask about school holidays but other than that, when he's not there and we tell them the afternoon before at pick-up that is totally sufficient. I think I'd do it like @ALV91711: suggested. Worst case is you have to find a new daycare :(

Woah, no way. They don't just get to make extra money and take away your spot like that, when you are still paying! Things happen, and you may end up needing to to send her in. There is no way this is legal.

That is kind of crazy. I would just let them think that she is going 5 days and call on the mornings your DH keeps her home. That way if he's called in to work he doesn't have to worry.

If they are going to fill your spot when she's not there then you shouldn't have to pay.

That is crazy. If you're paying for 5 days, then you should get 5 days regardless of the notice you're giving them. Is it a licensed daycare or unlicensed? If it's licensed, you might be able to find some rules if they can actually do that? Do you have any paperwork from when you originally looked into them that said about being flexible? Is there someone else you can talk to? Ugh, hope you get that sorted out.

Uh yea no. We're in an in-home but I just tell her morning of if he's not coming. I still have to pay so I don't see why you have to give them 2 weeks they're essentially double-booking the spots which would be fine if you weren't paying for the day but you are! We are part-time so if I tell her the week before he can go different days than normal.

We heard similar policies from daycare centers. DH has Fridays off so we were looking for daycares with a 4 day rate but realized we were probably going to pay full time most places. Most centers that required full time pay also required two weeks notice which I think is outrageous. We decided LO would just be sick whenever we wanted to keep her home, even if it was most Fridays. We're currently at an in home center and they don't mind last minute changes even though they have hired assistants.

Um, that's total garbage. If you're paying for full time, why should they get to make extra money on top of that?? We have dd in daycare part time with a rotating schedule and they've said that we don't need any notice if she's not going to be there. We paid for the spot, it's hers.

I agree this seems weird although I don't have anything to compare it to. I would ask if you get a refund on the days you are paying but they fill her spot with another child. Otherwise I truly don't understand what you are paying for. What would happen if you simply didn't show up on the days you said she would be there? It's hard for them to even argue about consistency being important for kids if they do drop ins...

@Mrs Spoon: This is exactly why I thought we were paying for the whole week. Sometimes a call comes in at 7am for him to come to work immediately. But she's saying that yes, she intends to fill our spot with other kids, and we may have to find alternative care if she's filled our spot with another child on any given day.

@catlady: Right, this was pretty much what we'd arranged when I first signed her up. It's now that she's saying we need to give her two weeks notice of days that she won't be there for any reason other than illness, and after the two week point if we end up needing care on a day that we'd said we wouldn't need, her spot will not be available.

Just frustrated because we specifically picked this day care because they were able to be "flexible". Even though I kind of think "we'll pay you to do nothing some days, just to keep the slot available to us" is kind of the least I'd expect for flexibility.

We let them know in advance when we can (like vacations, doctors appointments, etc) but otherwise go day-by-day. My DH also has a non-standard schedule and DD is at daycare less than most of the other babies, but our spot is ours whenever we need it. But our daycare doesn't offer drop-in care in the infant room, anyway, so they mostly want to know for staff lunch/break purposes. I'd be annoyed if I were you.

Honestly, if I were in your shoes, I would act as if she'll be there all five days, and then let them know when she will NOT be coming in. If you are paying for full-time care, they should not be taking in another child when yours is not there. That's what the part-time slots are for! My LO goes full-time, and I'll let them know a day or two in advance if she's not coming in.

We have to tell them if we aren't going to be there that day. Just like I call in sick to work. We have to give written notice if we are on vacation otherwise they plan for her to be there everyday. So they plan lunch, snack, and etc.

I think it makes sense that you need to tell them when you are going to be there. But I do agree if you are paying for a full time spot they can't sub in another kid.

That is odd. We told the director when we put down our deposit that DH is college teacher with a schedule that changed every quarter, and as a student my schedule changes every semester as they are totally great about it! They said to give them as much notice as we can if J won't be there but even if call the day of by about 6-7am,it would be okay. But I also don't think they have daycare drop in services either.
