No pain, except for when it wore off! I had to get 3 redoses because I would end up feeling contractions again. They work quickly though (it takes like 10 mins to kick in once they shoot more medicine in). The worst was when it wore off for the last time RIGHT BEFORE SHE CROWNED, HOLY HECK! They tried to get me to push through it and I broke down sobbing, got one last redose, pushed her out like 10 minutes later and it was all good. Don't be afraid to ask for more drugs.

@FutureMrsMcK: Omg. I'm picturing this right now and it is a little funny, scary/frustrating, but funny ;) Sounds like an episode of Friends or something!

@babyjmama: Still totally worth it for what little time it worked....let me get some much needed rest. I'm doubtful that I would have been able to find the energy to push if I hadn't. And really, the dead leg thing was funny at the time...it fell off the bed a few times and my mom had to lift it back on because I could not move it at all. Not so funny later on when I had to have two nurses help me to the bathroom because I couldn't walk on it, but oh well :)

@FutureMrsMcK: Oh no! I've heard stories about that :(

I progressed WAY faster than they expected so they gave me the interthecal (sp?) epidural. They said it's essentially a 2 hr dose of it.

I was talking cookie recipes w/the anesthesiologist I felt so good (this was after 7 hours of NO talking only head nodding--no joke) but the whole thing wore off about 20 min before I started to push. Yippee...?

Totally worth it if you ask me though!

I had a window of pain on my left hip due to the catheter being inserted in too far resulting in a slight kink. Once the anaesthetist pulled the catheter out 2cm I was good as gold.

I had my epidural in the early hours of the morning and by the time I started pushing at around midday I could tell I was having contractions but they didn't hurt.

I think you might say mine failed. Initially it was great and I felt no pain for a few hours. It was really nice because it allowed DH and I to both get some sleep. But after that I felt *everything*, which sucked because DS was very low, sunny-side up (back labor), and it was later into labor and thus more painful. My nurse kept asking if I was pushing the button to increase my medication. I was, and my legs were very numb (couldn't move them), but I could feel all of the contractions and back pain.

I loved my epidural. Loved. I wanted to hug the anesthesiologist. I basically felt nothing until they turned it down once I got to 9.5cm. My legs were so numb I couldn't even lift them... it was really bizarre. Once they turned it down I could feel the contractions pretty good on the right side of my back, and I felt rectal pressure when I was complete. I felt nothing but pressure while pushing. Pushing/delivery and stitches were completely painless for me. Get an epi!

They told me to expect a 70% reduction in pain - it was more like 95%. I found the pressure, once we neared the end, to be painful somewhat but nothing like non medicated contractions. Crowning still hurt a lot but I have nothing to compare it to.

I had horrible pain in my pelvis, but that was because DS was wedged in there funny and face up. I did keep the epi for two days after surgery and that was wonderful!

Not a bit. But I got the epidural 15 min before pushing and was already dilated, so it didn't have a chance to 'wear off' or anything. And compared to laboring naturally, nothing else really phased me lol!

pressure in my left leg when i had a contraction. it felt like a cramp... i didn't have the epi in very long (i was already at 10cm when it went in) so i'm not sure what wouldve happened later on. i could still move my legs like normal and walk right away :)

I kept pressing the button to up my epi so that by the time it was time to push I could no longer feel anything, and couldn't hold up my legs. I almost had to have a csection bc I couldn't feel enough to push. Luckily the nurses stuck with me and after 2.5hrs I had my DD. don't overdo it like I did! I did let some wear off but I mostly felt pressure like the others said. No pain, even took a 5hr nap once I got the epi.

In one leg from the thigh down I felt nothing and couldn't move it for close to 12 hours. When I first got it I felt no pain at all (it was awesome--such a relief), but it failed twice on me so for a several hours I felt everything where it mattered.
