I can definitely relate to this struggle! My daughter just turned 4 and I'm getting pressure from my mom to sign her up for stuff. She's in preschool 5 days a week from 8-5 pm, and just has swim lessons 1x a week for only 20 minutes.

I'm thinking about maybe enrolling her in gymnastics, dance, or piano, but want to take it slow! I really like our family time together on the weekends, and we do a lot together... I will miss those times if I have to start replacing them with scheduled activities. I figure she is still young, there is no rush!

Thanks for your answers! I don't know why I am freaking out so much about this topic. I want to be a laid back mama and this just shows that I am not!

I signed him up for TWO sports (four one-hour practices per week total), but they told me I could cancel one if it's too much, so I guess I'll see how it goes.

@Sparkler: Behavior is a big factor! You have to strike the balance between too-much-energy naughty and too-tired naughty. Ha!

My son is also the same age and is in school 8:30-1pm 5 days a week. We have a nanny so it gives us increased flexibility for activities during the week. This winter he is doing skating and gymnastics during the week and he does swimming on the weekends. When it was nicer out he just did soccer. For us, he gets jealous that his younger sister who is not old enough for preschool gets to do a lot of scheduled activities in the morning, so he asks to sign up for things! I don't think it matters too much, but his behavior is better if he gets exercise!

My son is the same age and he goes to preschool 5 days a week, from 12:15 -3pm. At the moment, we don't do any organized activities outside of that, but I am going to take him to a trial class for a gymnastics program this saturday to see if he is interested at all. If he is, it's 45 minutes every Saturday, from Feb-June.

Hi! Just curious about what you have established as the school/scheduled activities/unscheduled time balance for your preschooler.

My son (just turned 4) goes to school 5 days a week from 7:45 to 12:30. He has not been participating in any extra lessons, sports, etc. This semester I am signing him up for a sport 2x a week, one hour each, although due to waiting time and transportation this will lengthen his school day until 2:45.

Some people I know have their kids doing activities 4x a week and I thought about it, but then I got nervous that it was too much.

It's hard to know what is the best balance between unscheduled time and putting them in organized activities they really like! What do you think is a good balance?
