I think if it relates to the instruction (like videos of animals as in @MrsLonghorn's example) or if it is a special occasion like a holiday, sure. And I mean, as kids get older I know there are going to be substitute teachers and days they watch whatever the modern equivalent is of Bill Nye The Science Guy :) But in Kindergarten, I would not be cool with Peppa Pig on the regular.

zero, and I would be really pissed if I saw that happening.

We're still in daycare, and they have brought out a laptop and projector to look at and listen to videos of "real" animals when they were reading Brown Bear. I'm fine with that, as it is a clear educational link to the illustrated book. But daily? And just for cartoons? no way.

None. No screen policy for every room at our daycare (6 weeks - 5 years). Same for teachers which means no phone or app updates but I'm ok with that!

our daycare only does a tv show/screen time on days that it's too hot to play outside. I only know this because it was 102 here on Monday and my husband said they were watching Peppa Pig when he picked up in the afternoon, during what is usually their outside play time. If those are the circumstances, I'm ok with it. But definitely not as a regular occurence. We are paying WAAAY too much money for daycare to have them watching movies!

Maybe they need help with the car pick up line, or dont have a place for the bus pick up kids to go? Just trying to think from their side of things.

Wow, that is crazy! My DD's preschool (attached to her primary school) has zero TV time, but they do have computers and smart boards for interactive learning, which I am totally fine with. Kids nowadays need to learn how to use technology, but that does not include watching tv. I'd be super unhappy to know that my child was regularly watching cartoons during the school day.

I "think" my LO watches 0 minutes of TV or screen time at school. One time I got there and they were gathered around a computer watching some of those little kid music videos on youtube - which I didn't love cause LO gets hooked and asks for them non-stop - but it has happened once in 4 months so I think it's not the norm. They definitely do not have any TVs in the school.

@Bao: Is it during drop off time? I am kind of unclear as to when/why it is happening...are the kids waiting for the bus, to be picked up?

Maybe the answer lies in the procedure to get the kids out of the school...could it be that they're using the TV in order to free up the teachers for something else? If you find out what that "something else" is, you might be able to better frame a discussion ( I like to propose a solution/alternative rather than just make a complaint).

@Bao: I think it's your business right now, particularly if you're thinking about sending your child to this school for Kindergarten next year. I'd try to get this resolved immediately. There's only one resolution that is acceptable: No more TV shows or videos. It's an atrocious waste of children's time.

You could stop to talk to the individual teachers and ask about it, or you could go straight to the principal or school board. Either way, it would probably be a good idea to take some video of the TV-watching.

At daycare, none. But since LO started JK (public elementary school), she's been mentioning watching paw patrol, peppa, strawberry shortcake etc on the smart board. I think it's been after lunch, and she hasn't mentioned it lately. I'm wondering if for the first couple weeks as the kids adjusted to the lunch routine and eating independently, that instead of taking kids outside after they were finished eating, they were keeping everyone inside because some kids were taking longer than others and they didn't want two groups of kids in play...it's something I'm going to ask at curriculum night next week.

@Mamaof2: nope, these are kids waiting at the end of the day for pick up/bus. I have to get LO at 3:35 and the K doesn't let out until 3:45 so even if they just sat on the rug to watch, which when I walk by they look well into it...then that's at least 10 minutes a day. 50 minutes a week of Peppa Pig. But I would guess it's more than that.

There shouldn’t be screens of any sort in early elementary school classes.

As to the norm, most of the elementary schools I’m familiar with have smart boards, and I’m fairly certain based on what I've heard and read that most elementary kids are getting at least a few minutes daily of passive, TV-watching-type screen time in school. As I understand it, some videos are built into certain curricula. (Which is nuts, in my opinion.)

That said, I suspect that if this is at the end of the day, they’re waiting to be picked up and TV is an easy way to keep them in one spot and ready to go. Still, it’s not right.

I found out that our previous daycare had a TV that folded down from the ceiling. I never noticed it during the tour, and obviously "screen time" was not on the schedule they gave me. I found out from doing a drop off at an irregular time (due to a dr appointment) that they watch it just before lunch. I'm pretty sure it was a daily occurrence. It made me so mad that it was never mentioned. In retrospect now I know to ask.

I would not be ok with this at all. If it was part of an instruction, or a special holiday movie or something, that's totally fine. But a regular tv show every day? I wouldn't be cool with that at all. Why bother going to school if they're going to be doing something they can do at home?
