@regberadaisy: i'm sorry that you're having so much trouble! I wish I had advice other than never put her down! Haha. I know that you said there are certain Chinese customs that you are adhering to, so i'm sure that must play a role in why you can't just tell your mom off. Good luck to you!

@bpcmarj: My mom is convinced my ILs are to be blamed. She slept great the first week. But the second week my ILs were here and when they were not working at the new house for us they were holding LO constantly. So now she thinks they spoiled her. Doesn't make sense because the hours she is not sleeping were not the hours they were holding her! :P And hey at least she was sleeping. But even then she would not sleep much during the night since she slept so much during the day.

DD sleeps well, but only if i'm holding her. I have tried the swing, bassinet/pack n play, and her car seat. She just wakes up soon after I put her down. At this point, I just hold her for what feels lile all day and night. Sometimes she will sleep next to me in bed, mostly after DH leaves for work. In my arms she's consistantly getting about 4 hours of sleep in a row, since our second night at the hospital! So, I hear you can't spoil a newborn so i'm just goin with it.

@sarbear: wow!!! 5 hrs??! Impressive! I got 4hours once last week I think.
And ugh. I can't tell my mom that doctors say when they're this young you can't spoil them! She's 3 weeks! It's too young for self soothing! I think at least.

@crash806: Thanks! Our swing is over at the new house right now so hopefully we can get over there Sunday/Monday to grab it!

@regberadaisy: my mom hates that I hold LO when I try to get him to sleep. She said he needs to be in his crib so he's not spoiled and doesn't always rely on me for him to be able to sleep. I can't help it he feels comfortable in my arms/on my chest. And I'll spoil him all I want lol

Today was the worst day for DS for sleeping. Usually he is really good at sleeping during the day but today if he napped for 30-45 mins at a time i was lucky. I'm trying to tell myself he's going through a growth spurt(they say between 10& 14 days and 3 weeks, he's 15 days old today) because he's been a little extra cranky and hungry. And we can get him to sleep for 4 hr stretches in the middle of the night(last night I got him to sleep for 5 hrs)

Thanks everyone! Today the frustration definitely got to me a bit. But I'm just worried that I'm stumping some kind of development by her only getting half of her recommended sleep time a day. :(

@Mrsbells: I end up holding her at night sometimes just so she stays sleeping a little longer. During the day my mom insists on me putting her in her bassinet so that I don't "spoil" her. If this keeps up I'm just going to have to tell my mom to shut the door! haha

@crash806: I haven't tried the swing yet but is 3 weeks too young for a swing?? I tried her bouncer twice but she doesn't seem to like it for more than 5 minutes. But I haven't tried putting her in it after she falls asleep. I'll try that tomorrow as well!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: what does STTN stand for?

My dd (7 weeks) is asleep for at least 16 hrs a day. During the day she likes to be in her swing for her naps or her vibrating bassinet (part of her pack n play)- she usually naps for 3 hrs then wakes to eat.

LO had a hard time sleeping when she was new and only liked to sleep in my arms. So, for the sake of having her sleep, I just rocked her. But yeah, I think that for a newborn, you LO should be getting more sleep.

@regberadaisy: I only have one baby, and I'm certainly not an expert, but...

Little Jumper has always been a terrible sleeper. There was one day (she was maybe 5 weeks old??) where she was up for 18 hours straight. This was the hardest day for me, hands down. She would. Not. Sleep.

She's still an awful napper BUT has been STTN since she was 8 weeks old. So, for us, the whole "baby never sleeps" thing eventually evened itself out into a nice pattern of her falling asleep by 10pm and waking up at 8am.

She will take the occasional nap, but it's not something I can count on. When she does, it's for 30 minutes -- unless she's EXHAUSTED, then maybe it's for an hour or two. Again, not something consistent.

Hang in there, mama!! It's tough, but isn't forever.

My LO only wants to sleep in my arms too.
usually if i put her down she will wake up within an hour especially at night. but if i put her on her belly or hold her in my arms she can sleep for 3 hours plus. So I end up holding her for several hours day and night

I think LO was sleeping 16-18 hours the first month of her life?
She was asleep most of the time.
And yeah. 10 hours is way too little for a 3 week old.. Have you tried having her sleep in a swing?

This week my LO -she will be 3wks on Saturday- is barely getting any sleep. It's not that we're not putting her to sleep. She just refuses to nap during the day! I know she's overtired but we try to put her down to nap she just won't!

Yesterday she napped for the first time at 3:30pm, the day before 5:30 pm and today 7;30pm! Besides that the only time she sleeps is for like 30minutes in our arms. Once we go to put her down she cries.

I would say she's getting on average 10hrs MAX of sleep a day this past week. Aren't newborns supposed to be sleeping 16-20hrs a day!?!? Is it just a phase??

I'm a little worried that she's not getting enough rest. I'm calling the ped tomorrow to double check.
