Lo is 5 weeks, aside from when she is eating or being changed she is pretty much always asleep. If I dont put her to sleep after she eats gets very cranky and cries.
ETA: she sleeps 16-18 hours depending on how long it takes to feed her, change her and get her back to sleep

DS is averaging 15 hours a day right now; he's 9 weeks. I was having some issues getting him to sleep enough, since it's me and both kids home alone all day, but tracking his sleep has really helped. I use the BabyESP app on my Droid. I've been watching his patterns, and I noticed that if I don't get him down for a good nap in the morning, he'll hardly nap the rest of the day and ends up super fussy at night and takes forever to put down. So now, I hold him for his first nap of the day, to ensure he gets at least 1 hour in; then, the rest of the day he naps much better and doesn't become a total bear by bedtime.

@regberadaisy: Yeah, she's usually in total meltdown mode by the evening b/c she's so overtired. I can rarely get her to take a nap of more than 1 hour, and I'm not sure I've ever seen her nap for 2 hours, so count yourself lucky on that front. Usually we spend the hours of 5-7 PM nursing and rocking on the couch b/c it's the only way to keep her reasonably calm during the evening. My last resort is to give her a bath in the evening b/c that always calms her down. It's really a pain b/c I'd like to be making dinner in the evening, but instead I spend that time dealing with little miss fussy!

at what point does a baby stop being a newborn? 3 months? if so, my lo is getting 14-16 hours a day probably - she sleeps a solid 11 or 12 hours every night & then is up 1.5-2 hours at a time with a 1 hour nap in btw her awake times. though sometimes the naps are a struggle

@skibobrown: does your baby get really fussy too? I *know* she's tired and try to put her down for a nap every 2 hours. But she just fights it.
I can usually get one 2 hr nap a day. Maybe another 1 hr and usually 2 30 minute naps.
And she has not napped around this time -5- all week. I thought I had it today! And now 15 minutes later she's crying....

Same here. Naps during the day is also short bc he eats every two hours. I am lucky if he naps 30 minutes during the day time. I have a love to be held baby.

We have the same issue. I'm not entirely sure how many hours she gets but 11-12 sounds about right. I know she's supposed to be getting at least 16 hours, but she doesn't nap during the day for more then 30-40 minutes at a time.

How much sleep does your newborn get on average?

My almost 4week old gets maybe 11-12hrs a day. It's the lack of napping that really screws the numbers!

Does anyone's newborn actually get the 16-20hrs??
