Mine did that too. If she was awake more than 45 min, she was super crabby. I think I spent most of those days getting her to sleep. Her awake times started lengthening a lot (I feel like I increase it 5 min every week) after 3 months.

I figured it was normal but now that I think about it, my mom was always saying "she has to sleep again"?!?!?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: S has always slept a lot. I can't remember exactly what she was doing at 8wks, but at 4mths she is still sleeping 17-18hrs in a 24hr period. I have friends whose babies barely nap during the day and I much prefer it this way...it feels like an easier transition into motherhood because I still get hours to myself during the day.

I had a hard time the first few months bonding with #2! I felt like I know and love #1 so much and it took longer to feel connected to a sleepy newborn when you have a toddler who is learning so many new things! Agree at 4 months the sleepiness goes away and the personality starts to shine through. It develops exponentially after that!

I don't think there is a such thing as too much sleep,as long as she's eating enough. Some babies just need more sleep.

D was like that until around 7 weeks. I never had to try to get him to sleep, he just napped and age all day. Now, at 9.5 weeks he can stay up longer, but if he goes too long he gets over tired.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Im sure I heard somewhere that sleep is good for brain development :) E was a super sleepy little girl too. I would take it as a blessing!

I don't envy you the crying part, but I wish my LO slept half as much as yours...it's like she didn't get the memo that babies are supposed to sleep a lot, and she'll stay awake for 4-5 hours with like a 15 minute catnap in the middle. Of course, she gets overtired and crabby, but no matter what we do, if she doesn't want to sleep, she will. not. sleep. So, I don't know the answer to your question, but I think more sleep is probably better than less, for both mama and baby.

My DS was like that up until about 3 months old. He slept all the time. He's 7 months now and can go 2-3 hours between naps and is meeting his milestones just fine. I think some babies just like extra sleep. :)

I don't think there is such a thing as too much sleep :-) In the early days DS only had a 30-45 minute awake time.

M sleeps all day. She eats, cries for 15-30 minutes after she eats, has maybe 15-30 minutes of awake time, and then falls back asleep. She is NEVER, EVER awake for longer than an hour at a time.

I remember with W, she was very alert and awake at this age and would go 2 hours or more between naps.

Is M sleeping too much? How much does your 8-week old sleep?

This might sound bad, but I feel like I hardly know M because she is either sleeping or crying for the most part. She doesn't interact much and I don't really see her accomplishing milestones like I did with W..... :( :( :(
