I started my daughter on purees at 5 months. After about a month I moved to three meals a day of however much she wanted. She really liked solids, though, and seemed to need them, which is why I went to 3 a day so early. I always just fed her as much as she wanted. It never started to replace nursing until much later, and at 13 months she still nurses like crazy.

Here's the info from the AAP about solids feeding:

http://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/feeding-nutrition/Pages/Switching-To-Solid-Foods.aspx

We've done it different ways with our kids because they have had different needs. With DD, we started with rice cereal at 4 months. At 5 months we started introducing veggie purees; she normally ate 1-2 oz of puree. At 6 months, we bumped up to two meals a day, and started introducing fruits. I make my own babyfood, so I'm not sure what stage that correlates to, but she would eat about 2 ounces at each meal. We introduced chunkier purees (meat + veggie + starch) and a third meal at 9 months. She started finger food soon after that. At 12 months, she started eating a lot more finger foods, and naturally decreased her formula intake.

With DS, we started oatmeal at 5 months. He started out eating 4-5 ounces immediately (and he used to cry when we stopped feeding him too, lol!). We moved to veggie purees within a week, and start 2 meals a day at 5.5 months. He eats a full tupperware of baby food (4-5 ounces) at each meal. Our doctor suggested we start finger foods in a couple weeks (at 7 months), as well as adding another meal. I also wait a full week in between each new food, although the general recommendation is only 3 days between new foods.

Our pediatrician said to just start with purees at 6 months (since our son gets a daily vitamin we can skip the cereal). We just had our 6 month appointment a couple weeks ago and he said to increase to 2 meals in about 2 weeks but that breastmilk is still most important for him so not to increase solids too quickly or to replace nursing sessions with solids. We usually do solids about 30 min to 1 hour after he nurses and he can eat about 1/2 a container of gerber baby food, sometimes more if he really likes the food.

We had our first attempt with avocado yesterday. LO is 4.5 months old. My pediatrician said to use rice cereal to see if she was developmentally ready for solids, and once she was, we could move straight to purees.

I'm starting with a tablespoon or so of puree, then giving her the standard bottle amount she gets. That way the puree isn't replacing the nutrition from her bottle.

My LO just started solids after her 4 month appt- this is what our ped said. Start cereal twice a day x10 days. The start stage 1 veggies. Introduce a new one every 3 days to ensure no allergies. After all of the veggies are introduced, then introduce stage 1 fruit with 1 every three days. Continue with mixing them up until her 6 month appt.

Right now we are still in the cereal stage, adn LO lets us know when she is done. We are mixing cereal with 1oz of formula and thats about what she eats. We haven't started veggies yet, so I'm not sure of the equivalent, but is probably close to 1/2 a container. The ped said taht she should be in addition to her normal bottle.

Sorry I ask a lot of questions, but I'm a FTM, and our current ped (in the process of switching) isn't very informative, so I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing somedays :/ That's where you ladies are a huge help! So, my question is, how much solids do you feed your baby at a time, when did you move to finger foods, etc. At LO 4 month check, the ped basically told me to start cereal once day, and move to twice a day when I felt the need, and we'd talk more about solids at her 6 month check. That's in a couple of weeks, but meanwhile, she didn't seem to like the cereal, but she was very interested in what we were eating. So I started her on purees, and she loved them. I started with very small servings once a day, and I just added a second meal. She eats about 1/2 of a plastic gerber container per meal, but is that enough? Are most babies eating a whole container? Do you just let them eat until they are full? It confuses me because she said to be sure that the solids are in *addition* to nursing, and not *replacing* a session. I'm afraid she'll get too full and won't want to nurse. But then, gerber sent me a thing in the mail saying for her age group she should be eating 3 servings of veggies, 3 servings of fruit, etc. per day and on 2nd stage foods. But the 2nd stage food containers are twice as big as the first stage! And do you feed your LO several different foods per meal? When do solids start to replace nursing? Am I the only one totally confused when it comes to balancing solids/breastfeeding?! Sorry for the bombarding with questions. I in need of some guidance obviously :)
