I'd keep it the same. It wasn't until DS was about 9-10 months did he drop the number of ounces he was taking. Even the drop in amount was not much.

@Skadi: can I ask what sort of solids your LO is eating? At five months it's probably more important for your LO to be getting the majority of her calories from breastmilk and depending on what sort of foods your LO is eating, the bm will be more calorific anyway.

If it was me I think I'd be keeping the solids to a minimal amount (perhaps just enough to help with the reflux) and sticking with your normal amount of milk. It's probably also worth noting that the nutrition / vitamins / minerals etc in breastmilk are far more accessible than those from solids and therefore better from a health and growth standpoint.

@katsupgirl: I think BLW would be a great idea in this situation!

I'd keep the milk amount the same just because babies seem to get picky sometimes about solids and if that happens it will get tricky trying to adjust all the time.

Would you consider baby led weaning? That way your LO could get practice with some solids but won't over eat because table foods aren't as quick to get down. Just a thought. BLW has IRS own set if anxiety producing issues.

We kept milk intake the same when introducing solids and things worked out fine. I am sure you have heard "food before one is just for fun" as most LOs are still getting their nutrition from milk.

Maybe try a few days with 25 oz milk/5 oz solids and a few days with 20 oz/5 oz and see if there is a difference in her eating/sleeping/etc. If you could get away with pumping less that might be nice?

Or, given the BMI issues and lack of satiety your LO has displayed though, you could give a quick call to the doc to see what they recommend given the particulars of your situation.

When lo was that age, we kept her milk Intake the same and just added in one meal. Gradually we upped it to two meals and now at 9 months she is at 3 meals. She pretty much eats the same amount of milk. I don't worry myself with the calories and what not. I just feed her the usual amount and should she need more we up her solid amount a little.

I'd stick with around 24 oz in a 24 hour period. If your LO gets that, it shouldn't matter how much they get in solids since breastmilk provides the nutrients they need.

I'm a little confused about how much breast milk my LO should be drinking. I exclusively pump. My LO is 5 months old and eats purees (pedi recommended starting early to see if it'd help her reflux, which it does seem to be doing to some extent). From what I've read online, on average, she should be getting around 25 ounces of breast milk per day.

But how do you factor solids into the equation? I've read that an ounce of breast milk has just shy of 20 calories. From what I gather, most of the food she's eating is around 30 calories per ounce. So it seems strange to keep her at 25 ounces of milk PLUS solids.

So let's say she eats 5 ounces of solids a day. Do we then reduce her milk to 20 ounces, to even it out and not overfeed her? Or do we just give her 25 ounces of milk plus solids?

A few months ago, our pediatrician was concerned that she had such a high BMI. She has reflux and we concluded that she was comfort nursing. He recommended we curb her milk intake to under 32 ounces a day, and this has worked pretty well for us. Despite her spitting up, she's within the normal range of weight. Solids have thrown us for a loop because we don't want to overfeed her, partly because that seems to contribute to the severity of her reflux. At the same time, of course we don't want to underfeed her.

Most of what I've found online has been along the lines of, "Just let them eat until they are full and you'll know they are getting what they need." But that has never been the case with our baby. If you let her drink milk until she decides it was time to stop, she'd eat and eat until most of it comes back up again. It's the same with solids. We've experimented a little bit, and even after drinking six or seven ounces of breast milk, she'll eat three ounces of solids at every meal.

The average baby consumes 500 calories a day. She easily puts away 75% more than that because of the solid food, and may even eat more if we let her.

My DH believes I'm overthinking it. I probably am. But I just don't know how much solids we should be giving her vs. how much milk. What do you do?
