I get freaked out by the amount, too! I have started holding her upright for longer after feedings, even if I'm not burping her and when possible I try to feed her at an angle...like cradle hold but with head higher than legs. I think it has helped some!

It's probably a lot more than you think it is. As long as she is gaining weight and doesn't get really upset when she spits she is likely fine. But try to keep her as upright as possible when you nurse her and then keep her upright for a good 15 minutes after she's done and that should help cut down the spit up.

As long as she's happy and gaining weight, there's likely no problem. All babies deal with reflux to some extent because their systems are so immature. Some just need extra help to deal with it. Hiccups are due to immature nerves. Not a big deal in most cases.

I second what @highwire: is said. It probably looks like more than it is.

My son spit up a ton as a newborn. We were going through 24 burp rags in less than a week. He still does daily at 5 months, but not as much. It never seemed to bother him and he was gaining weight fine, so my ped wasn't concerned. He used to get the hiccups a lot too, but that has died down now.

Does she appear to be extra fussy?

DS always spit up like that, which I kept bring up with his pedi, but until we saw blood in his stools they assured me it was "normal". I never believed it though. Their explanation was based on his continued weight gain (they finally realized he comfort nursed)....that said I think it is concerning when the quantity appears to be more than an oz. Also if it is like projectile vomit that is also of concern and her overall temperament. For us DS needed to be held in a vertical position since birth to not fuss. Huge clue. This was just our experience, so if you are concerned I would be persistent about it with your pedi. One of my biggest frustrations is that it had to get to that point for DS before my repeated questioning was taken seriously.

Sorry it that was all over the place but I hope somewhere in there I answered your question!

The LCs I've met with have always said that spit up is going to look like a LOT more than you think when it happens because it is liquid and it spreads immediately. They even suggested intentionally pouring an ounce of water out on a flat surface to see how much it is and then you can compare it to the amount of spit up you are seeing...usually the spit up is much less.

With that in mind, LO is a major spit upper. But I've talked to LCs and the pediatrician about it a lot and they've said it is normal. She's not in pain and not hungry immediately afterward, so we are okay.

Their digestive systems are new and developing, so they are still a little inefficient.

She also used to get the hiccups a lot but it has died down now (she is almost 4 months)

R is a week old ( I can't believe a week has gone by already) and the last couple days she has a couple really bad spit ups. Like it looks like it could be everything she just ate. All the times I have picked her up from feeding (use a cradle hold) and start to burp her and she spits it up all over. So she is up right when it happens. She seems to always get the hiccups right after too. She does get the hiccups multiple times a day.

How much spit up is normal for a newborn? When should I worry about reflux?

She seems gassy at times too. I haven't noticed a pattern with anything that I am eating.
