We generally do about $200 but if we're really close with the bride or groom, it could go up to $400. Many of our guests were even more generous with us - but they were older family members. But I'm from Long Island and this is very typical there (esp at the big Italian weddings I'm used to attending!)

We usually give $100 for DH and I. If it's a close friend, we give $150. If it's an acquaintance, and only 1 of us is attending the wedding, we give $50.

same as @bunnylove08. we live in the north west and i come from the north east.

people were super duper generous at our wedding -- we got a lot of monetary gifts from people who were not able to attend, as well as those who were able to.

@Bao: I've never given more than 50$. At our wedding, the most we got in cash was about 100$, and that was from my dad! I guess this is a regional thing, because all of my friends/family usually gift in the 50$ range unless its immediate family, then maybe 75$-100$ MAX? Honestly, I'd never be able to go to a wedding if I gave 100-200$! :)

I used to spend more until I realized no one in our circles spends that much.

So nowadays $25-50 for people we aren't super close to and $50-100 for people that are closer to us.

Well I guess this is totally regional because we had 240 guests at our wedding and only 4 people gave us $100-$200. Every other gift was $25-$50.

We could never afford to give more than $50 (we go to 5-7 weddings a year, have 9 this year) ...unless it was a very close family member, then we would give $100.

Eta: the people who gave us $100-$200 were people like grandparents or long time family friends. None of our "peers" gave more than $50.

I'm in Wisconsin and I've only ever given $50 (from both DH and myself). My "ideal" amount to give is $100, but the 2 weddings I've ever been to (besides my own) were RIGHT after our own wedding so we were broke (any gift $ we received went to pay vendors. I think we only got around $1000, anyways). So, we opted to only give $50.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: nah, I don't think guests should be expected to cover other misc costs. Just the food. And you(I) just have a general idea of what pp food costs are in both areas we go to weddings and what the current "going rate" for weddings are. IE I give MUCH more for Chinese weddings than American weddings.

@regberadaisy: I have heard that "cover your plate" rule, but how do you know how much a person spent on their guest. I am happy I opted not to have an expensive wedding, but my price per guest would have been over $450. My fixed costs: venue $5,000 rental fee and $8,000 photographer were pricey.

@Bao: spend what you can afford and what you want to give based on relationship with the couple and keep in mind the additional costs associated with attending (travel, babysitters etc)

We got married before most of our friends so, most of the time, we gift back whatever amount they gifted us. Some times I prefer registry gifts, if possible. I also take into consideration the wedding itself - if we have to travel, we might gift a little less than they did to us. Generally speaking, average tends to be $150 to $200?

I had semi-Vietnamese wedding (my DH is Vietnamese) and we mostly got monetary gifts from his side of the family and gift items from my side. Where I'm located, the minimum monetary gift is at $200 for the couple.

We always try to cover our meal at least. We give bare minimum $150 per couple. Regionally I think $60-$100 is more common. His aunts & uncles gave us $30-$50 per couple and our wedding was in NYC. But it was enough that they traveled for our wedding!

When we got married two years ago in FL, gifts ranged from $10 - $300.

I think $50-$100 is appropriate, anything lower than that seems cheapskate-ey, especially since it probably cost more than that per head for the catering and venue.

I grew up in a small town and we had about 200 people at our wedding. I think close friends and family gave us $50 - $100. I don't think anyone besides my Grandparents and parents gave us more than $100. When my brother got married I gave them $100, although I also spend about $100 on SIL's bridal shower gift. If its a really close friend I would probably do $50. At least in my town if you gifted someone a large amount of money they would probably ask to make sure it wasn't a mistake.

ETA: I think I should have made friends wherever you guys are from prior to the wedding! HAHA! $300+ is seriously unheard of around here! :)

We generally give about $100. If either of us are in the wedding or they are really, really close then we sometimes do $150/$200. My family on the other hand generally only gives $50 so i have found that it too is regional.
