@Astro Bee: my LO has never had any kind of milk other than breastmilk. She's 2.5 and after we weaned she didn't like/wouldn't drink WCM or any alternative. She's perfectly fine and her doctor doesn't think it's an issue at all.

When DS started daycare at one he was still nursing at about the same frequency. I gave him WCM at home before to get him used to it. To daycare I sent a 2L every week he didn't drink much to start and just nursed more at home.

I wouldn't worry about how much he drinks in a day just that he is drinking.

Do you think he would drink it better if it was in a sippy cup instead of a bottle?

I would ask her to offer water with meals and milk with snacks. Water is definitely more important!

@Baby Boy Mom: Even if we are only nursing morning and evening, once I go back to work? I tried giving him a little bit of water in a bottle with his meals a couple of months ago when he seemed a bit constipated. He had pretty much no interest in drinking it.

I would say as long as you're still nursing there's probably no real benefit to giving WCM over just water+food.

Update: I've tried giving him WCM for several days now, both in a bottle and in a sippy cup. He will mostly only drink an ounce or two, and prefers to walk/crawl around the room with the nipple in his fist. I don't think he's been thirsty, since due to his teething, we've been nursing a little more for comfort. Anyway, I assume he will drink more when I'm not there, since he generally takes a bottle of breastmilk very easily when I'm out of the house.

@snowjewelz: @FaithFertility: Good idea about just sending a carton or bags of milk to leave there.

@Adira: We'll probably say start with 3-4 oz, and have her go from there. Thanks for your input.

@Astro Bee: Maybe you can just tell them to try giving him 4 oz with the snacks and meals, but to give him more if he still seems like he wants more after finishing the 4 oz.

@Adira: Honestly, I'm not even sure if we will be providing the WCM or if the DCP will. She mentioned what kinds of snacks and meals she serves when we interviewed her, and I did say that I would be trying him out on WCM before he started, since I wouldn't be sending pumped breastmilk. It's an in-home daycare with oversight by an agency.

I know some kids in DD's class, their parents just send a whole carton of milk to keep there!

DD is 15 mo and we just sent one 5oz cup there along with water. She drinks 5 oz in the morning, and 8 oz at night plus eats cheese and yogurt so I think that's plenty of diary for her even if she doesn't finish her milk at daycare.

@Astro Bee: When I was still nursing, I sent three 5 oz bottles, but probably 4-4.5 oz would've been enough. You could always just send more than you think he will need and scale back after you get a feel for how much he really drinks.

@Adira: He will be there from 6:45 until 4:15 - so 9 1/2 hours, and it's located 10 mins away. I'm not sure yet if we'll be feeding him breakfast at home or if he'll get it at daycare, but at the very least, he'll have his morning milk and a little snack before he goes. 3 6 oz cups seems like so much, but I guess I just have no concept of how much is a lot. :silly: I can see it being less, since I'll be nursing in the morning, but how much less is still the question. Thanks for weighing in!

How long will he be in daycare each day? My LO is taking three 6 oz cups of milk over 10 hours at daycare, but he's not nursing in the morning anymore.

LO is 11 mo and will be starting daycare in a month, when I go back to work. He's been doing great on solids the last several months, and now I only breastfeed him morning (when he completely drains me), before each nap (x2), before bed, and usually once more during the day, so 5x total. I have no idea how much milk he is getting throughout the day. When he starts daycare, we will probably do morning, after pickup, and before bed.

The last few days I've tried giving him WCM to get him used to it, and he seems okay with it. I am wondering now how much to tell the DCP to give him during the day to make up for what I'm not giving him. I know his nutritional needs will be taken up by food, so this is more to ensure that he gets the liquids he needs.
