We could get everything we wanted in a house for $250-300k (max!). That's including 4 bdrm/3 bath, 2800-3000 sf, pool, 3 car garage, study, media/game room. We'll eventually move back to the Boston area where our families are and it will be closer to $700,000 to get everything we want. Our home is worth a lot less than our "dream" home and is also a lot less than what we could afford if we stretched to the max. But our home is great for us at this moment, it's in a lovely safe area with decent school, and it has three bedrooms plus a loft so plenty of space to grow into. Once we got our basic needs met we decided to stop there. It would be 4 bed, 2.5 or 3 bath, with a finished basement. Around here (Kansas) it would probably cost $300,000 depending on how much land we got with it and how good the land was. If we had land west of town it would be cheaper since the soil there isn't very good and doesn't grow crops as well.
