We went in a bunch during the first few weeks. She lost a lot of weight and we had latch issues, so there were a lot of follow-up appointments to make sure she was gaining weight, plus a couple of lactation consultant visits.

We didn't have our vaccinations until 2 months. Plus, being a preemie, we had to go in for weekly weight checks. I personally would wait to fly with a newborn until they are at least 2 months.

4 days, about 1.5 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, and I think we don't see her again until 4 months. With dd we had a 3 month appointment to follow up on something and one other one because she was so fussy we weren't sure if there was something wrong with her! (It was tummy/formula stuff.)

Beyond other things mentioned, a fever in a babe less than 2 months entails an ED trip, blood urine and spinal fluid cultures. It's a big deal. I wouldn't travel with a babe that young.

I wouldn't schedule a trip that early on; just because you never know what will happen.

with DS1 - he went for the five day check up, then weight checks (2x) the following week. Then first shots at his 2 month well check.

with DS2 - he went for first visit at 3 days, back again at 5 days for a weight check, then every day until day 8 for blood draws (jaundice) then overnight hospital stay that night (jaundice treatment). He had two followup pedi appts the second week to make sure his jaundice levels stayed down. Then we went back at 6 weeks because of suspected reflux and at 2 months for his regular well check.

Our appointments were at 2 days (hospital breastfeeding and weight gain check in), 2 weeks, 2 months, and next one is 4 months. The only other time I've taken her in is at 3 months, because I wanted to split her 2 month shots into 2 visits, so it wasn't 4 immunizations in one day. The first round of immunizations happens at 2 months, as others have mentioned.

I'd also take into consideration that you may not want to be away from home in those early days. I took my 1 month old to visit my parents, 2 hours away, for a weekend, and it was great, but I didn't want to travel more than that. I liked being home, with everything we needed, in a familiar environment.

Ok, I didn't realize first round of immunizations aren't until two months. He will just have to come home each weekend.

@Autumnmama79: and beginning next month he has another OOT assignment that will last for a few months. So far my pregnancy has been healthy & care free, but we're both happy to get a doula in case any mid-week emergencies pop up and I need support.

We went with my husband on a business trip (about a week and he had another one right after that we skipped.) It was awesome. I sat in a nice hotel room and nursed and watched TV. We didn't really have help at home anyway so it wasn't much different. We booked it knowing we would eat the travel cost for me if anything came up.

We didn't have any "extra" appointment after the first month.

That's tough that he'll be away for a month after your EDD! We stuck to the scheduled immunization and weight checkup appointments. However, you never know what kind of baby you'll have or health issues you/they may have. I say if you're feeling up to it, would be nice to be with your DH. I would also wait to decide until AFTER baby comes

ETA I have seen several posters on here mentioning that they didn't fly until after the 2 month shots though, so I would look into that.

The first round of shots are at 2 months. I can't recall, but i'm pretty sure i went to see the doctor about 2-3 times in the first 2 months. A pediatrician will usually come to check the baby before we are discharged after delivery.

I also had an appointment with a LC in the first 6 weeks, and a trip to the health clinic for his first round of shots. Although it's nice to plan for an OOT trip, you may never know what will come up.

Personally, I would plan to primarily stick close to home those first few months. You need a checkup within the first week for weight gain. Then at a month and i think again at 3. And as a FTM there will be times you will be freaked out and want to take LO in. Not that wherever you're going won't have pediatric care. But then there's out of network insurance etc.

You can always call your ped and see what their recommendations are for well visits.

As a newborn- first 3 months or so?

DH has an OOT assignment starting about a month after my EDD. Since I will already be on mat leave he suggested I join him for part of the assignment. I'd wait to fly with baby at least after the first month/ first round of immunizations. Online I found the AAP recommendations for newborn checkups, but wanted to see if people had to take their babies more frequently.
