Because he has dry skin, most nights we only use soap on his diaper area and his hands. I do worry that it might be too drying on his skin, but I lotion him up afterwards. My dad is a dermatologist and told us to bathe him at least every other night because the poop will irritate his bum. We only use soup every other night. When he was younger we bathed about every other day. He had lots of hair and it was soo greasy if we went too long! That's about the time it seemed more important to have the routine...so until 6-8 months or so. Now at a toddler (2) we do every other day in the winter due to her sensitive skin, unless it was a messy day then we do as needed. Sometimes our 3 year old protests and we don't feel like taking on the fight. They both attend daycare so I like to wash off the germs and for my 9 month it signals bedtime! However they both have dry skin as a result so we use a gentle soap and lather with lotion. They are almost 2 and 3.5 for reference. She just threw up soooo much and it would get in her neck folds and get gross. I don't think it was necessary, but she liked it. I've seen a lot of recent research saying that less bathing is better for baby skin and linking it to decreased eczema. So far it is working for us. He (21m) takes a shower 2-3 times a week and gets a sponge bath the other days.
