Our LO just wants to chew on the brush. Does that count as brushing? Anyway, I let Dad do the dirty work once a day. He hates it too and says whoever bathes her should do it. Oh and we have a double set. One long brush for us and a matching smaller one for her to hold. But she still wants the long one, of course.

She loves it when she sees me flossing my teeth and grabs for it, so I put it in her mouth even though her teeth are spaced far away just to get her used to the idea. I heard straws help with keeping away the liquid from the teeth...not sure though.

@cupcakemama: It think it's persistence and routine. The first week of brushing was tough. He kept biting on the toothbrush and tightly closing his lips. But we KEPT at it and basically telling him that this tooth brushing thing isn't going away. Every single night, we would keep attempting it. Eventually he kind of just gave in. It helps when daddy brushes his teeth at the same time too.

How do you brush their teeth - is it just persistence? LO loves the toothbrush and watching us brush but always wants to hold the toothbrush so a wrestling match ensues and not much brushing ocurrs! What are we doing wrong?? LO is 10 months.

We brush every night for sure but mornings are spotty. We always water down any juice that she gets and even limit that. And she never goes to bed with a drink, not even water.

She just had her first check up at the dentist and everything looks good to them. We'll work on the morning brushing but for now we're doing pretty good.

I'm super concerned about LO's teeth. My nephew had to have his baby teeth refaced (I forget the technical term) because they were rotten from him going to bed with a bottle. DS is breast fed, so no bottles at bed time, but he has fallen asleep at the breast from time to time.

Morning and night. And daycare does it once during the day, too.

I've never let my LO go to sleep with any liquids to drink. It is just water after brushing her teeth.

Now flossing I have not tried since she hated brushing her teeth for so long. She is liking it a bit more now so maybe I should give flossing a shot.

yes we are super duper worried about it after reading an article in the nytimes. we try to brush twice a day, but haven't attempted flossing yet. charlie loves floss so he'd probably just want to play with it!

I just read an article on Yahoo that there's been a huge increase in cavities found in preschoolers (from ages 2+). 42% of kids ages 2 to 11 had cavities in their primary teeth. Yikes!

http://health.yahoo.net/experts/dayinhealth/huge-rise-preschoolers-cavities

The article points to the root cause as being an increase in sugary foods and allowing children to go to bed with a bottle of milk or juice, which eats away at their enamel. They recommend brushing your child's teeth two times a day and flossing too.

We brush our LO's teeth every night before bed and sometimes in the morning. And we haven't tried flossing yet. I don't know how he would do with flossing. I can barely get him to brush his teeth longer than 30 seconds.

How often do you brush your LO's teeth? Do you worry about cavities?
