@stargal: I think calling as you are transitioning (this is a big change for you and them) is perfectly normal. Our daycare encourages it.

At our center, all calls are funneled through the office...if the room is busy/chaotic they will call you back with an update when they can. If its calm - they put you through to the teacher.

When I first put K in I called or stopped up every day for the first 2 weeks. Then I got comfortable and trusted they would call if they need me. I still called if I had a concern (sick/rough drop off/etc).

With E...I did not call - but I have a close relationship with the newborn head teacher so I had complete faith and trust...she also texted me twice with pictures/updates.

Dont feel bad...

I should add that for the first 2 months (4-6 month old) of her being in daycare, she was able to be in the daycare onsite at work so I went over everyday during lunch to hang out with her. By the time she went to a normal daycare she was 6 months old and I wasn't worried.

I used to call every day BUT, that's because I would go at lunch to nurse her, and I wanted to make sure she was awake and it was a good time to stop by. I've never called just to check in.

I've never called preschool/daycare (other than to say a child is not coming in that day). Preschool has never called me (except for a time a check got lost in the mail and I owed them $$, haha). Daycare has called my husband a few times because DD2 was (a) pretty worked up or (b) calm again after being worked up, but I think they only do that because they know he's on-site (it is a backup daycare at his office).

@stargal: I don't mean this AT ALL unkindly, but do you think you might feel better NOT knowing everything as it is happening at daycare ? I know that when daycare calls DH to say DD2 is having a crummy day (or hour!), and he subsequently calls me, all it does is make us feel like crap. DD2 is not sick, not hurt, not in need of anything, she's just expressing her displeasure at doing something she doesn't really want to do....and them calling us doesn't change anything, because since none of the above are issues, we're not cancelling essential meetings/appointments to go pick her up when nothing is actually wrong.

ETA: but as a previous poster said, you're paying, so as long as you're not wanting to have long conversations with them, I don't think it's a big deal to call for a quick check if it actually DOES ease your mind.

Last week was my daughter's first week at daycare (she's 4 months) and my husband called every day. She's our baby and we're paying a TON of money and the conversations are less than 90 seconds, so I have zero guilt about calling.

I used to call every day when he was little. He went through a rough patch where he wasn't napping and was sick all the time, then they moved rooms and he was miserable every day at drop off. Part of the reason I called was because all of the teachers that would spend most of the day with him would be gone by pick up. And I never felt like the daily sheets were all that helpful.

Once we switched daycare I stopped calling. And FWIW, we switched at 15m and even now at 2.8, we still have days of crying and clingey-ness at drop off.

Only when I have to call them in sick.
Both of mine started daycare at 9m and it was brezzy getting them used to the daycare setting, so that helped.

Can they go for 5 days to get used to the daycare setting more? Then after D has adjusted scale back to three times?

@stargal: I called a handful of times in the early days. I knew he was fine, but I wanted to HEAR it, you know? I teach preschool and have a parent every so often who needs a little more reassurance. Currently I have a mom who calls every single day just to hear me say "Yes, his morning was great! He did XYZ and is resting well now." she makes sure to call during rest time and it's really brief. I don't mind it, so don't worry about being "that mom" for a while.

@stargal: I just saw this and I so feel you. Fia started daycare at 20 months and it was freaking ROUGH. Like so much worse than I expected for so much longer than I expected. It took 8 weeks for me to not feel like she hated it, and just last week at 6 months in she finally stopped crying at drop off and I feel like she really LIKES it at daycare.

I don't think I've ever called just to check in. Maybe once when she was having a hard time her first few weeks. I do call pretty frequently though when I need something (generally they forget to release her daily reports to my email or I have a question about something).

Thanks everyone, I guess I'm just having a hard time letting go. He's 22 months and having a hard time adjusting (cries throughout the day) so it's hard for me. I have a lot of guilt leaving him.

I have never called. Our sitter called on the first day (to ask if she should wake her from a long nap, lol) but would normally only call if she had a fever or another symptom worthy of getting picked up early.

In the early days, we got a "report card" of when she slept and pooped and how much she drank. Once that became consistent, the reports stopped. (DD goes to an in home daycare.) Every now and then she sends pics, but not often.

I don't think you should feel bad for being concerned, but maybe try to think of what they're having to step away from in order to take your call. You'd probably rather they focus on the kids, right?

LO has been at two daycares- both of them called me the first day to let me know how she was going. I've never called for a status check - I mean, if she is having a bad day what am I going to do about it? I'm at work. Unless there's an emergency I won't be leaving...so I'd rather not have bad news! With that said, I love our daycare and our LO had a great time there.
