This is what I had, the photos make it look big and scary and obvious, but mine was none of those things. http://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/squamous-cell-carcinoma

@IRunForFun: yes. Mine was skin colored but the size of a mole and scaly- right next to my eyebrow. But they can be any color. The cut out a chunk of skin the size of a pea and I barely have a scar.

I've only gotten full body checks by a derm twice, and I think that was w/in the past 4 years. This past year at my regular physical I asked the doctor to look at a couple spots and tell me if she thought I should have them checked at the derm but she said they were fine.

Every time I go I'm absolutely convinced they'll tell me I need to have at least a few moles removed and checked, but each one I've been worried about I've been told is fine. I was also told they wouldn't remove any moles as "prevention."

Lots of skin cancer in my family, so I'm paranoid.

good news- it was just a cherry angioma (sp?) that had formed and the full body check went well. Phew! she did recommend that everyone get checked once per year, so going to do that from now on.

@NovBaby1112: Yeah, luckily it was caught really early (they called it stage 0), but it scared everyone in my life enough that they all went for skin checks. Even my OBs! I am a big fan of the dermatologist. Good luck!

@2PeasinaPod: I've also had the numbing medication a few times during pregnancy. There's a certain one they need to use, but it's considered totally safe.

I saw my derm when I had some birthmarks changed. He said that it was due to hormones. So now i just keep an eye on them....my skin has changed a lot with pregnancy and hormones and stuff, but nothing that falls within the ABCD realm.

Any Canadian Bees do this?

I had melanoma when I was pregnant with my son (had surgery to remove it at 15 weeks), so I go every 3 months. This was a spot I never could have found on my own, so I am a huge advocate for skin checks. It just looked like a normal freckle, which I have tons of, but the dermatologist noticed some odd borders when he looked at it using his little magnifying tool.

@youboots: no, I just noticed this thing on me which I thought was a scab as it is very small and sort of red/pink...but it hasn't fallen off and now soft to the touch, not hard like a scab, if that makes sense? I made an appt Friday to get it looked at along with a full body check, so we'll see...

I've only gone once, but I just read something in Health magazine about doing self-checks every month, marking anything new or different on a "body map" so you can track any changes. Seemed like a good enough idea but don't know how many people actually do this.

I've always thought I should go and after reading this, I will as soon as I'm not pregnant anymore. I've had a few precancerous moles removed but no one has ever done a full body check. Do you have to get a referral from your GP? Or just make an appt. with a dermatologist?
