Right now it's a bit more frequent because my sister in Taiwan for the summer and it's easiest to communicate via gchat. I used to chat ALL.THE.TIME, especially in college, uhm 10 - 11 years ago. When AIM (AOL Instant Messanger) was huge, I practically lived on there. I think my record was 12 or 13 hours straight of chatting during college. I always had at least 6 different chat screens open... I was crazy. I think the biggest difference is that I used to just sit on the chats for HOURS and my friends and I would talk about random stuff for no good reason. Now when I message someone, it's because I have a question for them, or there is a purpose to my chat. Plus, it was more discrete chatting instead of texting. Now, I strictly text - no chatting. I just text people. It's hard because I don't want to sit on facebook all day, and the one time I try to check something quick (say, an update or a message) someone I never talk to will want to catch up. I always feel like they think I'm BSing when I say I'm in a rush! I find when I get to chatting, it can take a really long time...in a good way but then I don't want to reject people if I don't have a long time. I rarely use my cell phone either just b/c I'm busy or wanting to have quiet for family reasons. Recently, I replaced my phone with a loaner and the texting is so awkward/inconvenient so I don't even text these days.
