My young niece lives with them 70% of the time, and my nephew used to live with them about that much as well. My parents have offered to take him overnight, but I don't know if they would know how to handle it, as they only watch him for a few hours a week. Getting him to sleep is so difficult, but hopefully once he gets a bit older, he'll be ok to sleep over at my parents' place. They all love it and it's always when we have a date night or plans with friends. mIL offered to watch her this Sat so we'll go out and she's staying with my parents at the end of the month when we go to a fundraiser. Once she is a reliable overnight sleeper and my parents were local... as much as they wanted?? lol. I would actually LOVE if they would watch her one night a week so we could have date night-- holy cow that would be awesome. But asking a lot I think! As it is, they put a lot of pressure on us to babysit. They constantly make comments about me going back to work and they could watch the kids for free, etc. I just don't get why they are so insistent on it. We sort of have a power struggle going where they don't respect me as the kids' mom (they have asked if they could take Alice to dr appts so they could talk to the specialist themselves?!?!). Anyway, I'm a control freak about my kids and I legitimately enjoying spending my time with them, so it's something that I just don't want to do in the near future. He stays at my in laws once every few months. He could stay more and they wouldn't mind but they watch him a few days during the week so it's already a lot. Plus our weekends are really our time with him. Sometimes it's 3 times sometimes it's zero. Just depends on their schedules, if they ask to keep her or if we need them to keep her. She's 17 months and has been doing overnights since about 11 months. She adores my parents and they adore her. My mom babysat while I went to a check up last week and I heard her tell LO "I couldn't wait to come over and be with you." we are so so blessed to have them and that I can trust them! I love it (dh and I sleep in then go to brunch before picking her up), she LOVES it, and so do my parents. Right now, it's only if we have something going on like an overnight wedding. My ILs are older and I don't know that they can handle him overnight, but my parents are fine with it. I think because my dad does child care for us once/week that sort of takes care of it, but it would be nice to be able to sleep in every once in a while! When the grandparents visit us, they stay in LO's room (which doubles as our guest room and has a queen bed). When she was very young, we had our crib in our room, but after she moved to that room, the grandparents sleep in there with her and they do all her wakeups. It's a really nice break for me and Dh! We get so much sleep, haha. That's the last time he did that, though. The kids will probably stay over a little later this year to give us a break. The kids will never stay over with ILs. Anytime my mom stays with her she comes to our house. She still very much gets into everything and my parents' house is not baby-proofed at all, so it's just easier for them to come to us. Once she's older I can see it happening maybe once a month or so.
