For easy access I use Dropbox for favorites so I can get the photos from both my laptop and phone any time. Sounds like a lot, but my eldest is 5yo so i've been a crazy camera phone mom for a while now. i love keeping photos from her babyhood and toddlerhood on my phone. It backs up occasionally to my Mac, and almost everyday, onto iCloud. My photos are auto backed up to drop box. I have the "smallest" version (of gigs) but it still seemed insane - 10 pictures and a video, and oh we're full. um..no. I looked in itunes and it said most of my phone was "other" - but I couldn't for the life of me figure it out! I deleted EVERYTHING - all my apps, notes, texts, etc. I googled and found something that said to restore phone to factory settings. So I saved everything to my computer, backed my phone up, and tried it - and lo and behold, now it saves tons and tons and tons of photos and videos.
