I get inner liners at the dollar store and switch them out every 1-2 months! The outer liners we usually keep on for 2-3 years, just because we have been moving apts that often for the past decade or so.

I'm so happy that I started using a fabric liner instead of plastic. I just throw it in the wash when the bottom starts turning pink and dingy. It sticks to the side of the tub so much better than plastic liners, so I don't have to deal with that yucky cold plastic touching me unexpectedly.

@auggiefrog: Same here! We're boring so we've used the same outer curtain forever, but it's a design that's more contemporary so it's worked well for every bathroom of ours so far! We do buy new inner liners when it starts getting gross looking.

I have had my same outer curtain about 5 years now. I've moved twice since I bought it, and it's worked well in every bathroom I've had. We get cheap-y inner curtains, and I change those out when they start looking icky.

I wash the outside, fabric curtain every so often in my washing machine. We have no plans to replace it and we've had it since we moved in together 3 years ago.

The inside curtain I sort of "wash" too ( I spray it after every shower and wipe it with bathroom cleaner when I am cleaning the tub), but generally I just replace them when they start looking gross. I get the liners really cheap anyway so I don't mind just replacing them.

@Hoots: We hardly replace inner liners either---I've washed it 1-2 times though. But also, we primarily take showers in the bathroom with a shower door, so the bathroom with the shower curtain is low use.

Huh. This is really interesting. I had no idea most people replace them more often than I do. My liners usually last years, but I make everyone (even guests) spray it down after every use with the daily shower spray. I get the liners and spray from the Dollar Tree so neither cost that much. I've never had mold or pink sludge issues. The house I grew up didn't need curtains, so I suppose I never really thought about it.

I get the same pink sludge. I bleach the inner liner every 3 months or so, and put it in the sun to dry. then I can keep them for about 2 yrs until the bleach just doesn't cut it anymore.

The liner I should probably replace soon. @Rainbow Sprinkles: we get pink grossness too. In the toilet too if I haven't washed it in a while- but not like nasty long, just over a week or whatever.
