@mediagirl: ha- I purposely do NOT give my MIL white towels because she gets makeup on them, so I give her the tan ones.

@codeitall: I know it's been like 2 weeks but after doing laundry I thought about this. All of my towels and my husband's towels are fine. It's just guest towels with spots. And then I realized, my mom uses a daily acne cleanser! All white guest towels from here on out!

@mediagirl: I had the bleach/ splotchy problem with a lot of purple towels and sheets. I pretty much don’t buy ones in that color now (also I have a husband who doesn’t love purple as much as I do anyway...). I assume it was from something i used on my face (it was bad on the pillow cases) but I kind of need to be able to touch my face with my sheets and towels.

I used OxyClean on the white and added vinegar to the detergent compartment of my HE loader (I didn't really know what to do???). Whites are way whiter than they were with bleach which was pretty crazy! I'm gonna donate our ugly, stiff beige ones. But I bought 4 gray towels in the meantime. Now you all can sleep at night!!

I think our current towels are 3 years old? They're white and I don't think they're too grungy looking. We use bleach occasionally.

I just did a HUGE towel purge when our local homeless shelter said they needed towels. I went outside with all of my old white towels and compared them to one brand new white towel. In natural light, it was readily apparent which ones had lived their best lives at our house.. I think I donated 80% of them. I mean, they were perfectly fine to use, but once I had them out I realize how tired they were. Our second bath is in our kitchen so you can see it all the time.

@bhbee: @pachamama: I found instructions for stripping the towels online that call for two cycles, one with white vinegar and the second with baking soda. I did that the first time, but since then I've been lazy and just adding the vinegar to a single cycle with detergent. (I've tried both in the fabric softener dispenser and straight in the wash, and both have worked fine for me.) This is for an old-school top loader, though.

We have a problem with towels looking like they've been bleached. I don't use bleach so I don't know what is happening. This went on in our old house (top loader) and this house (front loader).

So, we have towels from when we first moved into the old house (11 years now) and a few new ones for the guest bath, but those were mostly to match the color scheme in the new house.

@pachamama: FYI - our gray towels have not held up well. They got discolored quickly. Kind of like bleach stains, but I don't usually use bleach or strong face stuff, so I don't know why. Total bummer because I love gray!

We got 8 towels from our wedding registry 5.5 years ago, and they still look/feel almost brand new to me. The towels we have in our kids bathroom are ours from college (10-15 years old), and they're a little less soft, but I wouldn't say they're worn out yet!

So I have towels that are over 10 years old. They still get used for if I haven't done a load of towels in a while, or to dry the dog off after his bath. The best thing I have found for keeping them looking good is I bleach them (all of them with color safe bleach), and I use wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets. When they finally become too thin to soak anything up, they get cut up and sent to the man cave as rags.

I buy new towels when I want to change up the guest bathrooms or our bathroom with some new colors.

@avivoca: totally replacing towels was never a thing for us but my mom always buys us towels for Xmas or birthdays for the kids. When my towels get thin I throw them in the kids bathroom because we use them on the floor during baths and whatever. Also if we ever had towels that were really bad hey just became rags -it was totally a Great Depression household mentality

I am really hard on my towels in terms of using bleach on them, so they do start to show wear. I think I replace them every couple of years, but they do become rags at that point...same thing with my husband's white tee shirts.

Ha, we're still using the same three sets of towels we got for our wedding 11 years ago. I do want to get a set to have on hand for guests, and I'll need to buy a new set for my oldest daughter because she's too big for the hooded towels we got her as a baby.

My parents are still using towels that they got when I was a kid, and I'm 32 now. I feel like it's something that higher socioeconomic classes do, replacing towels all the time if they get dingy or have perceived dirt on them.

I think our last set we had for 5-6 years and then we bought new ones this year. They were definitely getting stained and old looking when we decided to get new ones. We probably kept them too long, but buying towels isn't something that crosses my mind often

@petitenoisette: Maybe it's because I don't have white towels? Or because I have a whole closet full of towels, so no one towel gets used too often. Also, I bleach my non-white towels and have only really gotten a bleach spot on one of them... which we still use.
