I buy cheap sponges from the dollar store, so I have no trouble replacing them as soon as I don't think they're good anymore. I've never put a sponge in the dishwasher. I just ring it out and put it on my counter beside the sink when I'm done cleaning. I guess I'm unsanitary. I change the sponge when the back green part gets to soft and ratty to scrub. I mostly use it to wash the knives and pots since we use the dishwasher for everything else. It still looks brand new after just 2 weeks, I'd feel so wasteful if I replaced it that often. I've used it for many months now and haven't tossed it yet. It seems to be in pristine condition still. Guess I could work better at disinfecting it though.
