@Hypatia: I do once a day and I put the pots and plastic in in too and cook from scratch for dinner. She must be cooking “real” breakfast or lunch. Like eggs and pancakes every morning and soup for lunch, rather than me who eats a bowl of cereal for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch.

@Hypatia: oh that’s a good point. In my last apartment I had a ne dishwasher that was actually 2 smaller drawers. Since they were small I did sometimes run one of the drawers twice a day. One drawer was considered a half load.

To follow up, I said friend but it's more accurate to say acquaintance --more like friend of a friend. I felt like I'd be prying or rude to ask how that's possible. I think she said she ran it twice or "sometimes even three times a day," so maybe three times is only reserved for parties and holidays? And maybe she has a really small dishwasher. It also occurred to me that maybe she has one those dishwashers that you can just run a half load in, and maybe she just runs the top rack two or three times. It will remain a mystery unless I run into her again and contrived some reason to bring it up. :silly:

I know my ILs are in the habit of running the dishwasher after every meal at home. However, they have 6 kids, a small kitchen, and don’t like to overbuy, so I feel like if they didn’t wash after each meal they wouldn’t have the dishes to prep/eat the next meal. Most of their kids aren’t at home anymore, but I think this is still their habit.

Family of four, 3yo and 5mo, SAHM, I handwash pots. We run the dishwasher at least once and sometimes twice a day.

It's bottles and bottle parts. I can't wait until DD2 grows out of bottle because then we'll be back down to every other day on dishes.

We put pots and pans in the dishwasher, and sometimes use serving dishes which also go in the dishwasher, and still only run it once a day MAX. I feel like we need a follow up to find out how this is possible!

@Hypatia: 2-3 times a day?!!!! do people really not reuse cups and other lightly used plates and stuff? Sorry, but that sounds SO wasteful. We are a family of 3 and run it max 2xs a week. We reuse as much as possible. My 2 year old uses adult glasses and silverware and I wipe stuff clean a lot. Mylanta.

Every 4 days (we have 4 sippy cups for my toddler, so that's my breaking point) , but DH handwashes over half of the dishes. This is breakfast and dinner for 2 + toddler. DH insists on hand washing lunch dishes and 95% of the toddler's snacks are served on the cutting board.

2 adults 1 toddler. Both work out of the house so she’s at daycare for weekday meals. Dishes are basically coffee cups and dinner items. So twice a week is our usual.

I run it 1-3 times a day, depending on how much cooking I have done. We are a family of four, I stay at home with the kids, and cook a ton from scratch. My husband also take lunch to work with him in glass tupperware which adds to the dishes.

@Mrsbells: he was 9 months old and "needed more one on one time than she could give him" with 2 other babies one was a month older, one was a month younger; and she had probably 4 older kids (2-4 yo). I don't know if that was really it, I really liked her, but the queen mom didn't like me much and a friend of hers kid took my son's place the next week. But it turned out for the best, a former co-workers wife's last nanny job started kindergarten a few months previous and she was in between jobs. She charges the same as the daycare ($150 a week), does his laundry, and comes to my house everyday, and he loves her!

we run it at least once a day. there are 5 (sometimes six) of us and we eat all our weekday meals at home, and often have playdates and people over for dinner. we also use a lot of glass and plastic tupperware type containers for lunch/freezer/fridge to cut down on one use plastics. sometimes i'll run it twice a day if we need to, so i can understand why OP's friend might too. they might also just have a smallish dishwasher?
