I adore them, and would be perfectly okay with seeing them more, but they're both retired and travel a lot/keep really busy. My parents live across the country. I haven't seen my dad and stepmom since our wedding (3 years in October), and my mom was here over Thanksgiving (and she stayed with us for the few days before/two weeks after E was born in August). I wish we could see her more, but all three of them live across the country (and I have no desire to spend the money to travel and see them. I could definitely see the benefit of having grandparents around to help out with kids. My inlaws live like 10min walking from my BIL, and I know they see their kids really often/babysit. @MrsTiz: @grizz: haha, I get it. I think I would appreciate mine more if I saw them less, even though I see mine less than you see yours! @regberadaisy: I admit the help would be really nice sometimes, but I also like not feeling intruded on. My MIL is a bit invasive. @bisous: totally agree about not wanting them to stay over...and DS is a toddler! I just like my privacy, I guess. I should say I do like my inlaws, buy I don't like that every visit has to be for multiple days plus a stay at our house or their house since we live far away. I wonder how I would feel if we lived closer, but just saw them for a few hours at a time, like for a meal or something? They are a 3.5 hour drive away and we take turns visiting them and having them come to us. They are such great in-laws and grandparents. They are super active and busy...FIL races cars in his retirement! LOL, I feel like they are busier than us. We have a great relationship though. They are about two hours away. I don't mind seeing them that frequently, but I do mind when it means they come here and stay overnight. They live 5 hours away from us and don't travel much, so we are always the ones going there. It's hard to travel 5 hours for just a weekend, especially with a dog that gets carsick, so we usually save up some vacation time and go for a nice 4-5 day stretch surrounding a weekend when we can. We try to visit them once at their home once every 1.5-2 months because the hubby loves seeing his nephew. In between those times, they will come into the city and we'll have dinner with them. MIL has tried to institute a monthly dinner, which I'm fine with, but i think if a holiday takes place that should count as our visit- she disagrees. In my defense, half the time they invite is over they aren't there when we arrive & expect us to just sit around & wait or they sit in their bedroom on the phone for 45mins and expect us to serve ourselves dinner without them... It's super awkward. They live 15 mins away. We'd like to change that.
