We did have one particularly awful car trip at 6 months where we sat with him for stretches, and a 12-hour travel day where we probably sat with him for 1-2 hours total for entertainment. DH and I thought it was safer for him to drive without all the screaming. Improved tremendously after we turned the car seat around at 18 months. Haven't sat in the back seat since. It never occurred to me that this is something people do regularly, other than if your child has health issues. We talk to each other and she tells me what she sees outside and sings. I briefly started doing it when he was around 6mos old and started to hate the car. It only worked a portion of the time, and then actually his ped recommended against setting the precedent. He still does not love the car but had gotten better about it. We only drive on the weekends, and not every weekend. We try to time it so that he's likely to sleep during the trip. After the first few months it became rare and now just about nonexistent. Our girl is 1 now, and hasn't really needed us back there with her yet. If we went on a road trip, my partner would probably pop back a few times. And he would always cry and scream when I had to drive solo during my maternity leave.
