So by default I end up doing dinner/bath time/pickup/evening activities "solo," but at DS' age (2) it's a cinch and I enjoy our mama/son time. Maybe 3-4x per year DH will travel for a day or two. And about once per year, DH will be gone for 5+ days. DH works a shift schedule so one whole week he is on nights and even when he is on days, he goes to bed early because his day starts at 3 am. When I only had one LO, it wasn't bad at all. With two, it is much harder, particularly bedtime. In the beginning I would often get overwhelmed. My mom does sleep over when he is on nights which is a big help. But sometimes the boys want just me, so she is company but not help. I work mostly nights (3-10) and weekends with a handful of regular day shifts. And he has a more 9-5 schedule. So we do a lot of staggered solo parenting with our nanny filling in the gaps about 15 hr/wk. We split the day pretty evenly. He leaves work work early and I get up with my son do breakfast, make lunches then drop off at daycare on my way into my office. At night he picks up, and handles bath and bedtime and sometimes meals.... Weekends we try to split and give each other some free time. Going to be a whole new ball game with 2!!! DH and I pretty much work opposite schedules. I work 8-4:30 and he works 1-11 during the week and weekends. DH is a medical resident so he has no control over his schedule and it varies month to month. This month is "easy" but he is still out if the house before LO gets up so I am always solo in the mornings to get out the door to daycare/work. But DH is in night school so he is gone from the time he leaves for work until past bed time 2 or 3 nights per week. And I SAH so it's a pretty long day on those days all by myself with her-- especially trying to do the night time dinner/bath/bottle/bed thing by myself (really only because she will only take a warm bottle so its a lot of running up and down to the kitchen). The plus side is when he's home, he's home all day long for 2-3 days and does a great job of taking over caring for our son. My husband works 48 hours on shift, then 4 days off. I've gotten used to it but sometimes I long for a "normal" schedule. But that won't ever happen!
